Bench just charged us for the full year. And then went under a few days later. I don't know the specifics behind their shutdown, but I would not be surprised if this was yet another example of an otherwise great business that would have thrived had they not taken venture capital. x.com/jineshshah36/s…

Our bookkeeping service Bench is shutting down today and I’m guessing they aren’t finishing the year end books for us. Not even sure how much work they completed given they tended to lag up to a few months in categorizing expenses. Gonna be a fun new years start to reconcile all of this. If you see my tweet history with keyword “Bench”, you would see that Bench’s demise was a long time coming due to inevitable AI. Note that we were already planning to migrate out of Bench before their announcement today. But the main question is how did Bench not capitalize on their brand name to lead the competition? They claimed that they already used AI internally and that human powered bookkeepers assisted with categorizations. That’s also how other current AI bookkeeping software services do it apparently. And not to mention Bench had a war chest of $110M in funding over many years. Did they got bogged down by too much payroll for bookkeepers and couldn’t change their business model quickly enough to offset churn. Second question is how did a PE firm not come swoop in and buy it even for pennies on the dollar. How bad are their own books (perhaps some debt or extremely bad churn rates) would it be that no fund or consortium of private investors would touch them and they had to die an immediate death? Either way, even as a customer it seems to be an interesting case study on a death of a (unicorn?) company that died from a thousand cuts from AI.

We have had nothing but bad luck when it comes to accounting and CPA services for our agency. Our current provider Bench literally shut the doors with no warning whatsoever. Now we are on the hunt for another CPA 🤦‍♂️

I’ve had so many people asking me about Ben that I wanted to let you know-Ben had a 2nd chemo injection on October 23rd and from that day has been getting worse and worse. He has lost use of his back legs-almost like they’re paralyzed. He can barely walk. He hasn’t eaten in 3 days. I’m currently in Pennsylvania with a holistic Dr who is administering a 3 day Vitamin C IV hoping it will flush the toxics from his body and give him a chance. The next 24-48 hours will tell us if he has a chance or not. I’m so thankful for ALL the love so many have shown him over the last couple years. One of the hardest things I’ve gone through in my life. Ben is my best friend and companion. I love him with all of my heart. If you’re a spiritual person I’d love for you to pray for my boy. 🙏🏼 He’s currently in an ER hospital overnight and I’m picking him up tomorrow for another round of Vitamin C. Please pray for Ben and hope he pulls out of it.
