@milorqu @mukualt I don’t think a specific age is ever given. I remember reading 13 somewhere but he was at least not 18 given the fact that Charles had to ask his parents permission and the “little brother” vibe everyone else had with him.

One thing that made the franchise so distinct with it's representation of East Asian cultures and use of Chinese was that it was not ashamed of it. It embarrassed it fully especially for a show in America but now they just abandoned this for what.

Speaking as someone with a linguistic background, I don't know how but they made "Avatarian" both sinophobic (eliminating the Chinese influence on the show) and orientalist (just transcribing English phonetics and words in an Eastern-inspired script) at the same time.

if they don’t speak chinese or write hanzi, a lot of worldbuilding doesn’t have meaning anymore. “aang” “yue” “chakra” “chi” “yin and yang” etc, etc. are now irrelevant sounds since they aren’t english words, which the fake language is based off of

Visually this does have some things going for it (notably its vibrant color scheme!) but the death of ATLAs original art style (which was mostly carried into korra as well) for a more generic voltron-esque burger shonen style really sucks to see tbh
