Last night was the Democratic status quo's equivalent of raising the white flag. It was a declaration that the current Democratic Party has no leverage on substance — no positive message to bring to the American people. Instead of endlessly debating the tactics employed by the people who got us here, it's time we inject a new energy into the debate. And our states, including New York, are critical in this regard. New York should lead the fight. We need to coalesce around a populist economic agenda that will result in universal healthcare, real livable wages, housing people can actually afford, and the belief that Democrats can truly represent the economic interests of everyday people.

A more accurate measure of GDP would exclude government spending. Otherwise, you can scale GDP artificially high by spending money on things that don’t make people’s lives better. For example, you could shift everyone who is building cars to working at the DMV. That would result in no cars and a much worse standard of living, but GDP would appear to be the same!
