"The problem does not lie with the voters" Actually, a lot of it does. The voters throw a tantrum any time a politician even hints at small reforms to pensions, welfare, planning or the NHS, all of which are unsustainable in their current state.
John Stepek@John_Stepek

Britain's political problem is not "comms", and nor are we "ungovernable". We simply don't have politicians in place who are able to rise to the challenges we face. The problem does not lie with the voters, much as many seem to want to blame us/them.

Whatever complaints MPs have about Keir Starmer, they are now descending into the kind of headless chickenry that - whatever and whoever the outcome - will make the situation even worse for Labour. If there is a grand plan starring Catherine West and a few PPSs, then it doesn’t feel terribly thought through. A period of calm would do none of them any harm. The general election is a fair way off. The next legislative programme is about to be unveiled. There are better ways to reach such an important decision and better times too. You are MPs not commentators who exist to feed a frenzy.

The ministers urging Starmer to go are feeding the hysteria. The next leader will be subject to instant leadership speculation and the next, and the next, whether Labour, Reform or Tory. Britain is becoming ungovernable. And the media fixation on this tittle tattle is not helping

What we crave is an old-school government so boring no-one knows their names. Competent, professional. But we're led by a story-hungry media desperate for new drama for sponsored podcasts. If they had their way we'd have a new PM every month, each worse than the last.

I feel bad for Starmer. He’s a decent and intelligent guy. I hate that the rot in the polls seemed to start instantly with his response to the Southport riots, which says a lot about the sorry state (and trajectory) of our country when it was exactly the right response.

Thinking Andy Burnham should have been allowed to stand in Gorton and Denton is a valid view. But so is that he could still have been in Parliament if he didn’t run off to Manchester after getting beaten to the leadership for the 2nd time.

At times like this I wonder if some in Labour want us to be a perpetual party of opposition. It's as if they don't understand governing the country is difficult and at times unpopular. They dont want to accept that getting the country back on track will take time and effort.

Fucking hell. Gordon Brown hasn't been appointed Minister of Popularity and The Common Touch. He's been appointed a special envoy on global finance. Jesus, why do we have such degraded political discourse now? Even from people who used to fancy themselves thinkers? FFS.
Jon Sopel@jonsopel

When Gordon Brown is the answer to the government’s unpopularity and lack of common touch…..😬

@JamieFonzarelli political media has become far too much about entertainment and reporters building their own clout, largely because social media and podcasting give them the arenas to do so. as a result everything gets sensationalised and distorted. journalism seems to be a contact sport now

FGS, it’s not hard. Media bias worse than before, a wholly imported political reporting culture from the US by try-hard commentators, the toxicity of social media and most of all ‘impartiality’ has replaced objectivity. The media ‘both-sides’ lies and makes them plausible.
David Yelland@davidyelland

I agree with @matthewsyed in sense that the circular firing squad of digital age political media is now making the job of PM, whoever has it, almost impossible. Leaders in business do not face the same, it is hell we reserve for our political class. Something fundamental has changed here, which we need to address and discuss.

I will truly never understand the absolute hysteria that has taken over the country when it comes to Keir Starmer He’s been a mid-range Prime Minister at worst That being said, it’s hard to see how he ever builds back some popularity
