What makes this even more frustrating is that this club actually has the money. Manchester United generate over £800m in revenue yet every summer the club still behaves like it cannot afford elite midfielders. Suddenly £80–100m for players like Tonali or Anderson is “too expensive”… but spending £30–50m repeatedly on cheaper “potential” profiles is somehow acceptable. That mentality is exactly why the starting XI keeps getting filled with overhyped mediocre players instead of genuine elite quality. Top clubs spend big on players that transform the level of the team immediately. United keep searching for cheaper shortcuts and hoping they magically become world class later. Then fans wonder why the club cannot seriously compete for the league anymore.

This is not a dig at Elliot Anderson or the fans who want him, but I think at some point we have to move on. He’s probably one of the best CM/DMs in the league right now, and at 22 years old, he fits the profile perfectly. But he hasn’t given us priority. Beyond the £120M price tag, he’s been prioritising City. And make no mistake, INEOS did reach out to agree personal terms with him, but he doesn’t want us. Ederson and Matheus Fernandes have given us full priority, and that’s why we’re signing them first.
