@markconradhack Under a Labour government they are largely an extension of the wider international Anglican communion, and a back-player in British affairs. It is a perfect time for a new generation to come in, and that seems necessary.

@markconradhack The CofE means something different under a Labour government than it does under a Conservative one, I think this makes it a good time to change leaders. Under Tories the CofE is an alternate place for the same coalition of people to discuss and represent themselves.

If #JustinWelby stays on as Archbishop of Canterbury, then it’s likely the church - already historically declining in influence and significance - will wither further & faster. He’ll have almost no moral authority going forward if this hangs over him in post. It seems inevitable.

@HeavyMetal_999 I have always found this a difficult album to love. It a sleazy record, with a misogynistic undertone that's difficult to overlook. For many years I had this album without giving Motorhead much thought, and then I discovered Overkill and the clouds opened.

A problem with the American system is that the Democratic Party is difficult to lead, so the project I am describing will have to be taken up by governors and congressional leaders, and before they are elected waves of empassioned activists will have to be resisted.

The UK Labour Party did this by systematically and methodically taking opportunities to cull the weakest elements of their coalition, until it was clear to the public they represented themselves and not the activist left. America never went on this journey, and it needs to.

@hellyeahcorks I had my first dentist visit today in a few years, but I have been regularly visiting the hygieneist and last saw them in august. 1 cavity in my life, and a clean bill of health today. I could claim my secret is chewing gum, or mouthwash, but really I just have good genes.

but I never had (and still have never had) a cavity or other issue. In contrast, both of my parents had many cavities and related issues....neither had fluoridated city water growing up in Buffalo. This is a fuckin no-brainer ppl. /thread

Seems like we should chat about unfluoridated water. Hi, I almost exclusively drank well water (i.e. unfluoridated) until I was 18. I've also never had a cavity.

@andygawt The reassuring thing about comparing it to Old Silvio, is eventually Silvio died of old age, and that ended Berlusconism.

@andygawt What are the parallels to Berlusconi's history of comebacks in Italy? Trump has always been compared to Berlusconi, and his comeback after defeat is no exception... And like Berlusconi its dangerous to argue it wasn't him that won it, when he kept on winning it.

@Chthonic_attack It's an odd album that one. All the songs have the same considerable strengths and gaping weaknesses. I don't think I can rank them. It's the Manic's "Achtung Baby" and I'll never have a personal relationship with it.

@andygawt I think Rory Stewart was in a difficult position, he's both a pundit and a leader in his community, there are very much people around him who want to know what he thinks and want him to be right. I'm actually a bit surprised you don't see that as your role as well.

@mb_allen Who do I need to talk to to let the government know that science and pork-barrell politics currently dovetail in a way that makes district heat networks a way to reward 2024's labour-switching voters? Maybe start with a senior geo-academic at a North East England university.

@PrehistSociety If any of you see Dr Ixer, give him my love. It's impressive to see him still knocking the ball out of the park. He interviewed me for my undergraduate admission, and remains a friend, and I am more goose than gosling now.

@andygawt People in the know said he was guaranteed to end his term early, but it looks like he's staying around till the close of play. I expect interested parties are writing empassioned screeds about "nuclear footballs" and "Eisenhower/Nixon handovers".

@Chthonic_attack Listening to Kristofferson for the first time in about a year... It really has one of the best track lists in the history of the album era, up there with Songs of Leonard Cohen. Yeah, the ultimate hangover record is Kristofferson.
