Does this depend largely on one's age? I've heard Dr. Peter Attia articulate almost the opposite idea in the context of people training past 65. That strength declines rapidly in short periods of inactivity rather than a steady decline over years. Thus one of the most important things to maintaining strength later in life is to not take time off (though he may have been speaking of more medium term than short term breaks).
