@tomwarren @isAdrisal But I'm not conflating two metrics. It's actually the correct metric IMO. Calling this a "load" is the thing that is misleading. The user doesn't know (or care) what a system designer at MS decided to partition into multiple executables for their own Conway's Law reasons.

if we're misleadingly conflating 2 different perf metrics (time to first frame latency and fps smoothness) then just factor in OS boot time so it's less than 1fps 🙃The reality is the new Run loads faster (94ms) than the existing one (103ms) that nobody has ever moaned about

Woke up to Ashes of Creation being shut down. I can honestly say I'm not very surprised after this current phase on Steam. In January of 2025 the team at Intrepid was doing a good job. There were bugs, performance issues, and moderation problems but they communicated and handled things relatively well. Fast forward to this current phase on Steam and everything imploded. Tons of content that we reported as broken back in 2025 was still unfixed even if it was extremely low hanging fruit. The systems that were built on were developed in weird directions that didn't seem to make sense or feel good overall. On top of that moderation was basically non-existent so players were routinely spouting racial slurs, threats, and hate speech in global all day. In any other game these people would be immediately banned. I went to bat for Intrepid many times over the years encouraging people to give them a chance. Removing misinformation and showing the community all of the best points of the game. On a personal level I am incredibly disappointed in the entire company now. This isn't the kind of environment that I want to build a community around and not one I personally want to support. I ended up quitting the game three days ago due to this and now it's been shut down entirely. I enjoyed my time playing Ashes with all of you regardless of the shitshow that it became. Looking forward to whatever new adventures we head out on in the future.

@kitty_bit_games @ChristoDuPless6 It is simply not feasible or economical to record that many lines. The VAs agreed to this TTS style system knowing that. If not this TTS system, the option would probably have been no voice over at all. Rather than recording every line.

@kitty_bit_games @ChristoDuPless6 We are not talking about Apex style "Weapon here!" or "Character here!". These are location based TTS generated call outs. "Weapon in locker", "Arc bot on roof" etc. For every weapon, character and location we are easily talking tens of thousands of combinations, if not more.

I don't care how well a game is received, if it uses genAI, it's a flat 0 and dead to me. Props to Eurogamer for standing against normalizing anti-creative business practice. Support real artists and work.

@PirateSoftware @SlanderedOne Apex legends had each of their characters' their actors voice all the items including new characters and guns that got patched in later after release. I guess what arc raiders did is better than nothing, but i wonder if they really couldnt just have the VAs do the work

Arc Raiders callout voices are the same technology as live stream TTS. The argument against Arc Raiders use of AI voices has reached an absurd fever pitch that doesn't make any sense to me. Lots of grand standing and moral highgrounding for what amounts to nothing at all. The voice actors involved were paid for their work and agreed to have their voices used in this Text To Speech system. A very large majority of streamers use the same technology every day. Despite this nobody cares until it's used in a video game. There was even a long standing meta across all socials to have Dagoth Ur voice TTS lines both live and on static videos. There was no outrage here and the original voice actor definitely wasn't paid. All of this just looks like being mad for internet points more than trying to fix an actual problem. It's fine to be mad I guess but at least be consistent if you truly don't want TTS systems used.

@SlanderedOne @PirateSoftware What is even suggesting to you that the other option would have been to have them voice everything? The option was probably to voice nothing and leave it as text chat/pings. Feels far more likely if your argument is that they are doing this to save money.

Embark Studios is using AI so they can pay their voice talent less. PERIOD. Whatever that contract is worth, it's less than what they would have to pay if they weren't using AI. A dev studio undercutting their talent for a game that's selling millions of copies is NOTHING LIKE imDontai not paying someone to sit next to him all day to voice his chat or Stevie Wonder using TTS for accessibility or whatever other analogy you all want to throw at the wall to see if it sticks. This post is divorced from reality. People are losing their jobs ACROSS THE COUNTRY because companies like Embark Studios are either flat out replacing them or they are paying them significantly less due to AI. In IT I've literally watched HUNDREDS of my peers lose their roles over the past two years. The vast majority of them have struggled to find work and many have accepted roles that clearly underpaid them because there was no other option. Those people who haven't already lost their jobs ARE TERRIFIED that the axe is soon to fall as companies continue to invent strategies to undercut the value of talent. These are the exact circumstances Embark Studios is taking advantage of and you are trying to advocate that it should be okay. There's definitely a fever pitch about the BULLSHIT but it's not absurd.
