@CliveWismayer Yes you are right ! they rise up the greasy pole as does scum. Many politicians enter the political circus ostensibly to do good but there are many bear and honey traps along the way

Wanna hear my theory of politicians like Mandelson? No? Well here it is anyway. They rise to the top of the greasy pole where they rub shoulders with the seriously rich & ask ‘why can’t I be rich too’? Then they find ways, peddling what they have to sell: contacts, influence & inside dope. That’s it.

Whenever I see pictures of Churchill’s funeral - the anniversary of which falls today - it feels like the last gasp of a kind of unabashed Britishness. Unequivocally proud of its heroes, unapologetic about martial patriotism and not yet undermined by cultural self-loathing.

How is it that I am almost 42 and I am still having full-body sit-up-bolt-right-at-3am anxiety dreams about missing a maths exam which, and I cannot stress this enough… meant absolutely fuck all to any of the last 25 years and I haven’t once needed to solve x since 2002.
