I often dismiss the "there's no perfect marriage" talks not because I believe there are perfect marriages, but because the statement is often used to paint in good light, troublesome marriages that should never have happened or should be immediately dissolved. My experience with my cousin and her family changed my view on marriages. We grew up together and she married when I was 9. By the time I got admitted into Uni she already had 2 children and because they had a house near my school I lived with them for 7 years. 7 whole years and they never had a disagreement nor fight in anybody's eyes. Nobody ever heard their voices. Their children are in their 20s now and they believe their parents never fought once and probably believe that's how marriages are worldwide, but that's not true. Because as an adult in the house at the time they were kids, I knew whenever my cousin and her husband had an issue. They never argued outside their bedroom and never openly disagreed over anything. They always spoke to each other in low tones and sorted differences in such a secret manner that nobody else knew what was going on. No raised voices. No screaming. No not cooking or doing your job. Probably also no withholding sex. But they were fighting, and I knew when, and how. But it was peaceful. Peaceful fights between two people who understood that emotions were temporary but their commitment in marriage and dedication to their 4 kids was permanent. Whenever I met a new babe that I thought I could take things seriously with I told them the story about my cousin and her family, and how I think their behaviour should be emulated. But nobody was ever interested in that until I reached my 30s and found my current customer, an exact replica of my cousin sister. So now when people say "no marriage is perfect" I shrug it off because I've witnessed 2 really good marriages that could pass for perfection, and I'm in one.
