In Malaysia, unpaid care labour, often carried out by women within families and communities has long sustained the economy without recognition or reward. Yet as policies begin to frame care as a profitable economic sector, this essential work is increasingly treated as an untapped resource for capital accumulation. Our Deputy Director of Research, Dr. Christopher Choong Weng Wai, cautions that redefining care as a commodity risks deepening inequalities and detaching policy from the lived realities of carers. He argues that unpaid care should be recognised as a form of social risk, one that societies must collectively plan for through shared responsibility and the pooling of life-cycle risks.
