On May 4, 1626, Dutch merchant Peter Minuit arrived on Manhattan and bought the island from the Lenape for 60 guilders in trade goods, roughly $1,000 today
The Dutch named it New Amsterdam, built a fort, opened trade routes, and laid the street grid, legal framework, and commercial culture the city still runs on
In 1664, the British seized it, renamed it New York, and kept everything the Dutch had built
Manhattan was purchased for 60 guilders
The British got it for free
