In 1942, Clark Gable's wife, Carole Lombard, passed away in an airplane crash. He was emotionally and physically devastated, and decided to join the Army Air Force. He attended the Officers' Candidate School at Miami Beach, Florida, and graduated as a second lieutenant on Oct. 28.
