Here's my blog post from earlier this week with one of my takeaways following our recent trip to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. For more analysis like this, and for real-time trade alerts, subscribe today at TradingWithCody.com. Peace in the Middle East? "...there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don't know we don't know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tends to be the difficult ones." – Donald Rumsfeld T he "Black-Swan event" in the Middle East –  the thing that nobody sees coming – would be peace. With all of the horrific violence that is happening in Lebanon and Israel right now, nobody has "peace in the Middle East" on their bingo card for the next decade. But after seeing everything I saw in the UAE over the last few weeks and reading and thinking about what is happening there, I think peace in the Middle East is indeed possible and I think the UAE is shaping up to be a key player in possibly bringing it to fruition. Given the rapid escalation of violence in Lebanon and northern Israel over the last few days and even hours, I bet I'm the only person on the planet hypothesizing about peace in the Middle East today. I started this article with a Donald Rumsfeld quote, which I know is ironic given I am talking about peace in the Middle East and Rumsfeld played a big role in convincing President George W. Bush to invade Iraq (which was a colossal mistake for the United States and needlessly cost thousands of innocent Iraqis and U.S. soldiers and sailors their lives). But even though I largely disagree with Rumsfeld's foreign policy, his famous quote included above is still extremely insightful. By definition, an "unknown, unknown"– or "unk, unk" as one of my old Baylor law professors put it – is something you are both not aware of and don't understand. Typically, it has a negative connotation but that does not mean it cannot be a good thing. Something can also go from an unknown to a known. I think "peace in the Middle East" is one of those good unk, unks that nobody is considering at present. Why is peace in the Middle East an unknown, unknown?  With all of the violence and escalation of tensions happening in and around Israel right now, most people simply believe that war and violence are inevitable and will last forever. The idea of peace seems like a whisper in the wind that was lost on October 7th, 2023. And why is the UAE's role in this idyllic scenario so mysterious? To start, I don't think most Americans truly realize what the UAE is and how the country has transformed itself over the last 60 years or so. Most people I know in rural New Mexico don't even know that the UAE is a country, even though most of them have heard of Dubai (mostly through social media posts demonstrating the city's impressive wealth like its fancy cars and amazing architecture). But when I went to the UAE, I was extremely surprised by what I found. Both Abu Dhabi and Dubai felt like modern Western cities. American and European brands were everywhere. I felt welcomed by everyone I met and it was truly easy to forget that I was standing in a foreign country some 8,000 miles from home. In fact, I've told everyone that Abu Dhabi and Dubai could have easily been mistaken for Las Vegas, NV, or Scottsdale, AZ with their pervasive luxury brands, modern infrastructure, and welcoming attitude towards foreigners. But the UAE is much more than simply a "playground for the wealthy" as some may believe. In fact, the UAE is transforming itself into a major international business, political, and cultural center. Abu Dhabi has an entire island covered in museums, including the Louvre and a Guggenheim which is under construction. The country has no income tax and they have designated special areas within Abu Dhabi and Dubai as international trade centers which follow British/American-style common law. International business abounds throughout the country and it's like the UAE is turning itself into the Switzerland, Luxembourg, or Hong Kong of the Middle East; in essence, a neutral and safe playground to conduct international trade. This strategy is already paying off, and the US and the UAE are already collaborating on a number of high-profile, high-tech projects. Microsoft invested $1.5 billion in the UAE's top AI firm, and just yesterday, the WSJ reported that TSMC and Samsung are both considering building semiconductor fabs in the UAE.  Moreover, the president of the UAE, Sheik Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, begins his first official visit to the USA today, and I expect Sheik Mohamed and the Biden/Harris administration will announce more collaborations in the days ahead. Further, and perhaps most importantly, the UAE is one of the signatories of the Abraham Accords, which is a multi-lateral peace treaty between several Muslim-majority countries and Israel. Clearly, the UAE is pushing hard toward peace and international cooperation. But in order for its strategy to work in the long run, I think it needs to push for broader peace and stability across the region. As long as the Israel-Palestine conflict rages on, and as long as Iran makes existential threats toward the USA and Israel, westerners will be hesitant to significantly invest and/or live in the Middle East. In short, it is in the UAE's interest to push for broader peace in the region. If it does so successfully, it will have positioned itself as the clear political and business leader for the Middle East, and that will pay big dividends for decades to come. To be clear, I'm not saying that I know the details of what Middle East peace will look like, and in this article, I am not proposing a solution to the current Israel-Palestine-Hezbollah conflict (and please don't attempt to interpret what my political views are by what you read here).  What I am saying is that we have to continue to believe that peace is possible, and what I saw in the UAE gave me hope that in fact it could happen perhaps even sooner than most people believe. This has clear implications for investing, and we will discuss those further in future articles. Regardless of your political views (and I certainly have them), you have to recognize that war is horrific and extremely costly. We should all pray for peace as soon as possible. Onward and upward!

Elon explained to everyone on the $TSLA call (and especially the sellside broker analysts who seemed to be almost purposely asking stupid and pointless questions) that if you don't think Tesla can solve autonomous driving and/or humanoid robots that you should sell the $TSLA stock. I'd say that if Tesla were valued as just a car company, it'd probably be worth about $50, maybe $80 per share. On the other hand, if they solve autonomous driving, the stock will probably go up 8-10x from here. If robots work out over the next ten to fifteen years, the stock would probably go up 20x from here. A couple of weeks ago at that Vail investment ideas conference we were at, someone started their presentation off with this question to the audience: "How many of you here are intimidated by biotech/pharma?" Every single person in the room raised their hand. When @smith_bryce12 and I were walking back to our hotel that night, I turned to him and said, "If everybody else is scared of #biotech and #pharma, that means we can get an edge by doing the hard work to not be intimidated by it. I didn't know the EV business five years ago before I dug in and became an expert on it. I didn't know the smartphone business twenty years ago before I dug into the MP3/iPod market and envisioned the coming Smart Phone Revolution and became an expert in it." We can and are doing the same right now in biotech/pharma. Stay tuned for a full Pfizer $PFE write-up in the next week or two. I'd give $PFE an 8/10 rating right now.
