@Tunisia_1943 Tell us about Manahi please. And the real reason he was not awarded a VC for all his valor in Takrouna battle.

On This Day 1943: at first light, at Takrouna, the scale of the NZ Division's disaster was clear - all objectives still in enemy hands, hundreds dead, every battalion in disorder, one battalion withdrew without permission, Brigadier Kippenberger found in tears. #TunisianCampaign

It's #StainedGlassSunday - whatever glass they had at Oued Zarga church it's now gone, destroyed and never repaired after the battles in the area in 1942 and 43. Below the Church ruin stands the tiny but beautiful @CWGC cemetery. #TunisianCampaign

#TipOfTheDay: study the battle deeply, then walk the ground, then study some more, then walk the ground again, this time with clarity, confidence and competence. That's what I'm doing here walking the ground at Mareth with Tunisian Army, learning off each other #TunisianCampaign

Noticed this plaque earlier this morning while touring the North Africa American Cemetery & Memorial. Now wondering what Ploesti (Romania) is doing here? The Ploesti raid by the Americans in 1943 is well documented. Anyone knows if some dead soldiers were brought to RIP here?

@Tunisia_1943 Coming from Fredendall in particular, that statement is all the more scarier! Or as the Americans themselves love to say: those who cannot do, they teach.

"...the US was actually the BEST prepared of all combatants in WWII..." a controversial view from Lt Col (R) Bud Bowie - looking forward to his presentation tonight on @WW2TV!

OTD 1943: Kesselring flew from Rome to meet with Rommel at his CP under this railway bridge in Kasserine - it was obvious to Rommel that his gamble had failed and it was time for him to go back to face Montgomery on the coast near Mareth. von Arnim was gleeful. #TunisianCampaign

OTD 1943: Rommel's thrust into Kasserine Pass is failing. The furthest Axis troops, the Italians, could not get past Dj Hamra which 'filled' the Pass. His alternatives were the thrusts towards Sbiba and Thala but they too were in trouble. It's snowing. #TunisianCampaign

Then and Now - the Allied memorial at Takrouna - easily missed as it is in a garden cafe, surrounded by bushes, overlooked by the later Italian memorial. The video view has Dj Bir behind, the photograph shows Dj Takrouna as it was in the 1950s. FYI @SlimMenzly #TunisianCampaign

Life Magazine photographer Eliot Elisofon may be the most celebrated photographer in 1942/43 Tunisia but he did not take the greatest photograph IMHO, that was this one by Captain Geoffrey Keating @MadeleineMilano @WW2TV ©IWM Looking forward to tonight's talk! #TunisianCampaign

@Tunisia_1943 @YockelsonMitch @Mother_of_Tanks Alan Moorhead in his book “March to Tunis” mentioned the Baroness who used to live in this castle and how the Italians drunk all the wine in the cellar and roasted the peacocks in the process 😂

Great listening to @YockelsonMitch on the @Mother_of_Tanks podcast. It mentioned Ike and his 'driver' Kay Summersby. This is where Ike played (!) with Kay in Tunis - the wonderful Ennejma Ezzahra Palace. The Bridge table and room have been faithfully restored to its 1943 standard

WW2 military historians are more credible and valuable when they are honest. Not getting off on nostalgia-porn or military violence or 'taking' sides. Their job is to unravel real lives, real triumphs and real mistakes. #TunisianCampaign
