I spoke to a woman from Byron, New York this weekend who told me what's become of her idyllic country-way-of-life since ORES decided to destroy the town for solar industrial complexes. When foreign corporations get to deviate from local zoning everyone else has to follow in rural America, this is what happens. She told me that locals were not properly informed about the construction incoming. I hear this happens often with massive solar complexes. One day it was country roads, bird songs, and rural landscapes. The next day and their pastoral home became the epicenter of multinational industrial destruction. As she told me: "One day our quiet road had virtually no traffic. The next, it felt like a freeway. Heavy equipment, construction vehicles, workers everywhere. Roads and parking lots carved into the fields next door. Constant noise Monday through Saturday, often beginning at 5 or 6 in the morning. I don’t even like opening my windows anymore because all I hear is machinery, engines, and people talking outside all day long. This used to be the kind of place where you recognized every face. Now there are strangers everywhere — at the gas station, in the store, even right outside my backyard." This woman used to walk down their country road often with her parents. She told me she no longer can. "And as a woman walking alone, I’ve had encounters that made me uncomfortable enough that I no longer feel safe. It makes me nervous for my daughter to even play outside in her own yard. I’m not saying the workers are bad people. But they are strangers brought into the middle of a tiny rural community, and suddenly they’re surrounding our homes every single day." She said the wildlife, landscapes, and character of the community have been destroyed. The animals are disoriented. She and her parents witnessed confused turkeys wandering through areas they never went in before. She said they have never seen that in 38 years. And what are the local residents getting in return? Nothing. The solar companies lie right at our doorsteps. Your electric bills don't go down. In fact, they triple. What measly power that is generated is sent to cities far away. Productive farmland is destroyed. And the small-town families that make up the patchwork of our nation are terrorized into either trying to sell their homes, or closing the doors and blinds, hoping the hell will one day be a distant memory. As she said to me, "Byron was once a beautiful, quiet place, and now it feels like it’s been sacrificed by people who don’t care what this town means to the families who live here." ORES must be dissolved and all responsible for its creation and legal protection must be named and held publicly accountable.
