The bail application of murder accused Matipandile “Andy” Sotheni has been postponed to Thursday in the Brakpan Regional Court. Sotheni faces 16 charges, including murder, attempted murder and the illegal possession of ammunition. He has denied any involvement in the murder of Marius van der Merwe, also known as “Witness D” at the Madlanga Commission. Police allege an AK-47 rifle was used in the killing. Sotheni denied owning such a firearm, claiming a previous employer had one. He also told the court in an affidavit that he knew Wiandre Pretorius, who later took his own life, and alleged that Pretorius had told him he wanted Van der Merwe dead. The prosecution is opposing bail. Sotheni is a former police task force member.
