Matthew Tichenor, our Second camera operator, kept rolling just a little bit after this take and I’m so thankful he did. Sharing the moment here. It’s after Mark loses for the first time and he goes back to his locker room alone. This camera was hidden in a closet.

@jason_blum @TheRock I was really moved by this film. Incredible performances by Johnson and Blunt. Supporting cast did a great job too. You could tell it meant a lot to them. It was fun seeing Bas Rutten on the big screen! He killed it.

#TheSmashingMachine is fantastic. Such a unique fighting film. Where others feel like rock, Safdie made this feel like jazz. There’s this weird tranquility to it that I found so refreshing. Hands down the best performance of Dwayne Johnson’s career. I didn’t know much about Mark Kerr going in, but I definitely do now. What a journey.

#TheSmashingMachine: @benny_safdie has created something really wonderful with @TheRock depicting Mark Kerr’s journey between 97 and ‘00. This isn’t a movie about winning, it’s about accepting that loss is okay. Sometimes we lose. Accepting that and picking ourselves back up is the real challenge. The Rock brings a bubbling intensity to Mark that is masking the daily pain of his career path. Emily Blunt plays Donna, Kerr’s girlfriend who in many ways is devoted to him in unhealthy emotional extremes — never feels over the top…just two humans struggling with different kinds of pain. Not enough being said about Ryan Bader as Mark Coleman, was really impressed with him. Benny is getting well deserved recognition for his work behind the camera. More should be said about his editing. Something he’s always excelled at in his work throughout his career but it really all comes together perfectly here. Loved Nala Sinephro’s score. The 16mm footage looks fantastic in IMAX. Great film, out October 3rd via @a24.
