I just made all my old tutorials free, just use the discount code "Free" to get 100% off (since gumroad doesn't allow you to set the price to 0). I hope they will be of some use to some people out there! #gameart snefer.gumroad.com

@LiamTart Restrictions is one of the best methods to allow you to focus on pure visual aspect I feel. Too many choices in the pipeline just makes you pause to solve the same problems over and over again.

Some props I've been working on today for our scifi logistics game - Rusted Frontier! 64px/m texel density, very strict UV snapping to maintain that consistency. Keeping poly count as low as possible. Baking most things flat to a texture. It's fun to give yourself constraints!

@adrianchm @exphrasis Yeah, gotta jump in with Geoffrey here, tons and tons of talented people are struggling now. Of course it depends on where you draw the line for “talented”, it’s a sliding scale for sure. Also this is more true in Cali than Europe. We’re not hit nearly as hard. Cali is cooked.

@exphrasis I gave you a very simple way to burst my bubble and heal my delusion. But we both know why you won't take me up on this offer, don't we? :) Still, this was heated but quite civil discussion, and I appreciate that. Cheers.

Very honored to have @edgeonline yet again let Neon Giant grace their cover! First time we showed off the game in a playable form and gave hands-on for someone else. Can’t wait to show more, and very happy with the article, the excitement is real!

Neon Giant’s No Law is the cover star of Edge 421, available now. Inside, we visit the studio’s Uppsala HQ to access the world of Port Desire, where the creators of The Ascent are scaling new heights with a cyberpunk immersive sim betting big on believability, agency and chaos.

Internet in Europe has become so annoying in the last 2 years. I don't think Americans realize how lucky they are. It now feels like being in one of these poor secluded authoritarian countries, forced to use VPNs for mundanities everyday to escape stupid regulations.

I'm 37 and I don't pass age verification with a selfie on @Vimeo. Ok. Too bad. I'm not giving any government ID to unknown, unreliable third-party companies.

@PS_Leoluch @MR3Dev You can also make things with a very specialized art pipeline, like we made for The Ascent. But this is not something studios can copy, or use for a larger scale. The tech knowledge needed today is several orders of magnitude higher today than 10 or 20 years ago.

I would not say that I do not agree, but we are talking about art production only, not creating successful game. My main point is that we can't go back to 2010-2015 content wise. And usage of an unreal marketplace is not really that different from outsourcing. Personally, I see a lot of potential for AA and we reinvent the wheel too much. But if you want to go to this "AAA quality" - you are doomed

@MR3Dev @PS_Leoluch No, because that hurts development in other ways, obviously. And increases financial risk for the studios even further. It will rule out a lot of types of games.

@MR3Dev @PS_Leoluch I have never worked with an outsource studio for modeling that could handle it internally. Maybe if you lower your standards enough to ship whatever.

@PS_Leoluch So none of the outsource studios you work with has a lead artist that can solve that? Maybe stop using the lowest bidder

@HelderHP @thomasmahler Yeah, this is not very complicated at all, pretty easy to set up in unreal. It’s just well used and in a game with limited environment, SP, and a focus on physics. Something like teardown is more impressive :)

You're touching on one of my biggest frustrations in regards to how game engine technology evolved (or didn't), I assumed by now we'd have really good breakable systems that behaved convincingly per material type. Control being the one exception, with great breakables tech, but it's obviously in-house, and I'm not sure if Remedy r&d guys ever publicly talked about how they achieved this. It's legit impressive youtu.be/dOVBk2nl5Ck?si…

Anyone remember this? youtube.com/watch?v=7K5euA… This video is 18 years old now. And physics in games still haven't achieved what was shown there, 2 decades ago. Personally, I think this is the kinda stuff where advancements in tech would have far more impact on the players experience than making graphics a tad sharper once again. I think it's high time we see some more advancements in fields like physics and enemy AI behavior in games since in both those categories, I think gamers would agree that not that much has changed for the better, sadly. In general, I think in some fields we've actually seen regression instead of progression. It's nice that developers can use photogrammetry and asset libraries now, but... I think players have noticed that environments in a lot of games have become a whole lot more static due to that.

@rafcolantonio @pcgamer As far as I know, pretty much every imsim I know of sold quite a few copies as well, it was just that the budget were sometimes maybe too high. Too risky for the big AAA productions.

@pcgamer Maybe it’s more of a matter of statistics: in any genre, success is rare. Give imsims are rare, then it’s even rarer to see a successful imsim.

@henningsanden @HelderHP @Chozabu @EuropaGame Not everything is exposed to blueprints. Lots of variables are not, for example. Anything that needs to run thousands of times, be multithreaded etc. Calls to blueprints don’t scale very well.
