Phase 2: OSINT and Digital Investigation Open Source Intelligence — OSINT — has transformed modern investigative work. Information that simply didn't exist or wasn't accessible a decade ago is now available to trained investigators who know where to look and how to legally obtain it. In missing persons and cold case work, OSINT allows us to trace digital footprints, identify previously unknown associates, verify timelines, and locate individuals connected to a case who may never have been interviewed. Social media, public records databases, archived web content, and a range of specialized investigative tools all form part of this process. We won't detail every tool and technique we use — partly for professional reasons, and partly because the landscape changes constantly. What matters is that OSINT is applied systematically and legally, and that findings are documented in a manner that supports further investigation or, where appropriate, law enforcement referral. Phase 3: Witness Re-Canvassing One of the most underestimated elements of a cold case review is what witnesses remember years later that they didn't say — or didn't think to say — at the time. Memory is complex. In the immediate aftermath of a disappearance, witnesses are often in shock, uncertain whether what they saw matters, or simply not asked the right questions. Years later, with the benefit of perspective, context, and sometimes the courage that comes with distance, people remember differently. They come forward. They fill in gaps. Professional witness re-canvassing isn't simply knocking on doors and asking old questions. It requires building rapport, asking open-ended questions without leading, and understanding how to recognize when someone knows more than they're saying. It is as much an art as a technique — and it is one of the most consistently productive phases of a cold case review. Part 2 of 3 ends here. New information changes a case. But what happens with it — how it's analyzed, documented, and acted on — is where professional investigations are won or lost.
