Rangelands cover about 60% of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) and are the primary source of livelihood for 25–30 million people across the region. Climate change and land-use pressures are putting these ecosystems and the communities that depend on them at risk, and yet their stories remain largely untold. To mark the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), we announced a photo competition in July 2025 on the theme: “Voices of the highlands: Life, land and livestock in a changing world”. The contest highlights the importance of pastoralism and shines a light on the richness and resilience of pastoral communities across the HKH region. Watch till the end 👀 When a snow leopard encounters wolves, it will usually steer clear. Even when there may be only a single wolf(like in the video), it still prefers not to take the risk. This mutual avoidance reflects a simple truth: survival on the Plateau is never easy.

Irbis. That’s what the #SnowLeopard is called in Russia. It inhabits high-altitude mountain ranges across 12 countries, including India, China, Mongolia, and Russia. In the Russian Federation, the species is primarily confined to the Altai–Sayan ecoregion. According to a 2024 estimate, only ~90–100 individuals remain in Russia, making this population vital for the species. The estimate highlights the importance of continued monitoring, cross-border cooperation, and sustained conservation efforts for the conservation of the snow leopards.
