Overthinking it alert (and a bonus 40-man thought on Enmanuel De Jesus):
One reason the Tigers may want to option Enmanuel De Jesus is to have a lefty and a righty in the Toledo rotation ready to go for rainouts. The last several years have seen the 27th-man doubleheader recall used a lot early in the season:
Matt Manning: 3x 2024
Keider Montero: 2x 2024, 3x 2025
Would the Tigers option De Jesus so they can strategically recall a lefty or righty for these situations depending on the opponent? We'll see in two short weeks.

@IYKbaseball I think Rainey is essentially competing with Hanifee, who hasn't looked great this spring and I think pretty clearly lost favor with Hinch toward the end of last season. I don't think there's another RHR ahead of Rainey. So could be!

Rainey ..was pretty much Tanner Rainey..solid stuff..randomly throws 6 consecutive balls after dominating the first two hitters throwing strikes..then regroups throws 4 strikes and gets the third out..likely a front runner to come north

The Tigers are valuing what's predictive here. K rate is far more predictive than ERA or small sample size AVG. They clearly value Guenther enough that they brought him back on a Minor League deal after nurturing him through his injuries. They like him exactly the right amount - as depth.

watch Rainey..mostly watch if he can throw strikes..he and Guenther have to be very in the mix to make the roster..

What does the IL60 placement mean for Troy Melton? As far as I can tell, not much. By my count, he'll be eligible to be reinstated on May 25. He can start a 30-day rehab assignment on April 25.
I Am Not A Doctor: Imagine he needs 2-3 more weeks of rest, then starts throwing again followed by bullpens around April 1. That could put him right on track for a rehab assignment on April 25, where he'll just build his innings back as a starter and be ramped up to full innings right around May 25. At that point he'll either stay in the AAA rotation (where I'm presuming he'll be by the end of his rehab assignment) or ML rotation/pen depending on what's going on.
