The stated goals are: preventing anti-tank missile fire on northern settlements, preventing infiltration into the Galilee and creating conditions for the Lebanese government to dismantle Hezbollah. Israeli media quoted Zamir as saying the army urgently needs more soldiers amid ongoing fighting on multiple fronts. He called on Knesset members to pass legislation allowing the recruitment of Haredim at military service age and to extend mandatory service from 30 to 36 months. The Israeli army continues its attacks on Lebanon despite the supposed ceasefire, with daily strikes having killed more than 470 people since the truce took effect on April 17.
