This looks good on paper but won’t work in reality. To keep “real” intense pressure, one needs to impose a blockade. To impose the blockade, prevent Tehran from closing the Strait of Hormuz, and deter the regime from targeting US forces and partners in the region one needs significant military assets in the region. If US has to keep significant forces in the region, the more rational decision is to use it to force the regime to surrender or collapse in a short period of time.

Miad got this right when many did not. Tehran is now cutting production gradually to prevent an abrupt shut down of production when its storage capacity is fully depleted, which was somewhere between 4 to 8 weeks. The key is persistent and intense pressure on the regime. I still think using the massive military assets in the region just to impose blockade is underutilization of those assets, given that naval assets do not have unlimited window to stay afloat in the region.

Early reporting indicates Iran’s oil exports fell below 1 million barrels per day in April, down from 2.1 million bpd of oil and condensate in February. The U.S.-led blockade took effect on April 13. If blockade continues Iran’s exports in May will move towards zero, probably around 300-400K.
