I once stood behind a guy at Whole Foods checkout who used his EBT card to buy a $14 box of gourmet chocolate chip cookies and multiple bottles of Fiji water.
It was traumatizing for me because I abstain from such luxury purchases even though I can afford them.
And even if EBT funds can only be used for food, those funds free up a persons OTHER money to be used for fake hair, manicures, giant TV’s, Netflix, Spotify and many other unnecessary luxuries.
Money is fungible.
I don’t think it’s a stretch for honest taxpayers to feel resentment when EBT recipients enjoy ANY luxuries of modern life. They should have no luxuries at all.
I’m open to counter-arguments but it’s going to be tough to change my mind on this one.

SNAP literally only pays for food. That’s all it can be used for. We haven’t had actual welfare checks for like 30 years.

Ugh, it turns out "top 10% by income IS NOT half of all consumption!" Rather, the top 10% is responsible for closer to 35% of all consumption, which is much less dramatic. Should've realized the number was suspect the moment I noticed it comes from Mark Zandi/Moody Analytics. He made up some suspect statistics on the contribution of the Ukraine war to inflation vs IRA, where he overstated the former and minimized the latter without doing any real analysis other than intuitive guesswork. Going to Bayesian-update Moody's Analytics as baseline non-credible going forward.
