The first time #US congresswoman Ilhan Omar was caught on camera saying things a United States congresswoman should not be saying, some media outlets came out strongly in her defense. They found alternative translations for what was abundantly clear to every Somali speaking person: Ilhan professing how she uses her Minnesota congressional seat to push a #Somalia first policy. Now it will be interesting to see what strategy those media outlets will now adopt to shield her again, after a new clip surfaced where she’s standing proud, next to a former prime minister of Somalia as he reinforces her January statements. For context, Hassan Ali Khayre was prime minister of Somalia 2017-2020, presidential candidate in 2022 and a sitting member of Somalia’s parliament. His comments therefore aren’t from some retired politician but from an active one. Khayre is also expected again to make another run for Somalia’s presidency in the presidential elections scheduled for May of 2026. So the question is: Out of the 435 house and 33 senate seats up for election in this year’s election cycle, how many other candidates besides Ilhan Omar, are fortune to have on their campaign trail, a sitting MP and former prime minister of a foreign nation?
