The campaign is aimed at driving Al-Shabaab out of the area and reopening the strategic Kismayo–Afmadow road, which has long faced security threats. The operations have included airstrikes, ground offensives and repeated clashes with Al-Shabaab fighters.
Jubbaland is home to some of Somalia’s strongest and most experienced Danab Commandos and Jubbaland Armed Forces, widely regarded as among the country’s most successful units in the fight against Al-Shabaab. Despite 17 years of war, however, Al-Shabaab continues to control large areas of southern Somalia, with military operations against the group still ongoing.
