@AxelTalksFilm I’d be really surprised if they cut out something that potentially impressive and expensive

Netflix just collected a $2.8 billion check for NOT buying Warner Bros. A month later, they raised your subscription price.
Netflix's ad-supported plan was built in 2022 as a safety net. When prices crept up, and subscribers considered canceling, Netflix offered them a cheaper alternative rather than letting them leave. It worked. By late 2024, over 55% of new sign-ups in countries where it's available chose the ad tier. That plan now has 94 million monthly active viewers worldwide.
On the old model, Netflix made money one way: your subscription. On the ad tier, they charge you $8.99/month and sell ads while you watch. Ad revenue hit $1.5 billion in 2025, and Netflix expects to double it to $3 billion this year. Total revenue is on track for over $51 billion in 2026.
When Netflix launched its streaming-only plan in 2011, you got the full library, no ads, for $7.99 a month. The ad-supported plan costs $8.99 today. You now pay a dollar more for Netflix with commercials than you used to pay for ad-free Netflix.
That same ad-free experience now costs $19.99, a 150% increase from the original price. Netflix can keep raising prices because people keep paying. The password-sharing crackdown added roughly 50 million subscribers in 18 months. Netflix ended 2025 with 325 million paying members. They're spending $20 billion on content this year, with $2.8 billion in breakup fee money from Paramount sitting in the bank.
A Citi analyst projects another price hike could come by October. The ad-supported plan has gone from never-increasing to twice-hiked in 14 months. The plan Netflix built to keep you from canceling is itself getting more expensive.

Netflix is increasing their subscription prices again: • Ad-tier: $7.99 → $8.99 • Standard: $17.99 → $19.99 • Premium: $24.99 → $26.99

@anishmoonka You know, I used to think that they were eating a lot of losses hence the frequent price hike but I’m just realizing that It’s just gool ol corporate greed. I myself prefer the uncanny waters 🏴☠️
I love TV but I can’t justify having 6-7 different subscriptions!!
