I deal with them daily, and it's mostly people running out of fuel or failing to look after their tyres. Let me tell you, a smart-motorway is far safer than any other.

@jbsurrey1 How would a hard shoulder have helped here? He ran out of a fuel in lane 3 and was struck by an HGV driver not paying attention. Smart-motorways aren't dangerous, it's the people using them that are.

@belfastbornlad @33minspodcast @Lostock_Henge If it was measured deaths per mile, then my driveway would be the safest road in the country, an A road carries less traffic, but has more deaths, hence why it's measured the way it is. Every country in the world does it this way.

@belfastbornlad @33minspodcast @Lostock_Henge Deaths per mile, is not and will never be a way to measure risk, It's measured per hmvm, to account for an area, for instance a 4 lane motorway carrys more traffic in that same mile, than a 3 lane motorway or a 2 lane dual carriageway. SM carry more traffic and have less deaths.

Shall we compare fatality rates? Because let me tell you, smart-motorways win every time.

@HighwaysNWEST smart motorways are never smart! Broken down van in lane 1 on the m6 south between 17 and 16 and the “smart” motorway hasn’t shut the lane!

@adam_leah2012 @NationalHways Firstly, nobody ever said they're getting scrapped. Secondly, the smart motorway did its job then, speeds set, slowed traffic down and got you through easily. If the speeds weren't set, you'd have been sat in traffic. You clearly don't know how they work.

@NationalHways what happened to smart motorways being scrapped? M42 south west every day down to 40. No need at all, there's no traffic. Purposely creating traffic slowing it down. No accidents, no stranded vehicles stop taking the piss 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

@Ian_xxxxx_ @StaffsPolice I think you need to understand how smart motorways work, dynamic speed limits prevent you from sitting in traffic... those 50s slowed you down, so you didn't sit in traffic. That's how they work.

Over 80 drivers were found to have breached ‘red X’ lane closures on our motorways following a joint road safety operation. We’ve seen an increase in the number of drivers breaching closures recently, resulting in delays to blue-light responders and increased road safety risk.
