Pharmaceutical professionals from across the country convened in Nairobi for the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK) Dinner and Gala Awards 2025, a prestigious forum recognising excellence, innovation, and leadership in pharmaceutical practice. Held at the PrideInn Azure Hotel, the event brought together pharmacists, regulators, industry leaders, academics, and policymakers to celebrate outstanding contributions to healthcare delivery and patient-centred care. The Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, attended the gala as the Guest of Honour, underscoring the Government’s recognition of the pharmaceutical profession as a vital pillar of the health system. In his remarks, Dr. Oluga commended pharmacists for their critical role in safeguarding medicine quality, promoting rational use of medicines, and strengthening service delivery across all levels of care. He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the growth and professional development of the pharmaceutical sector as part of broader efforts to advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improve health outcomes for all Kenyans. The PSK Gala Awards continue to serve as an important platform for recognising professional excellence while fostering collaboration between government, academia, and the private sector in building a resilient and people-centred health system.

Joined Health CS Hon. Aden Barre Duale at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital to inspect the ongoing installation of a cancer radiotherapy machine — a critical milestone in our mission to decentralize specialized care and bring lifesaving treatment closer to the people of the Coast region. We are also working closely with the Ministry of Health to expand ward capacity in response to the growing number of cancer patients seeking treatment at CGTRH.

The session was chaired by Dr. F.M. Siyoi, Chief Executive Officer of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB). In his opening remarks, PPB Chairman Dr. Charles Githinji reaffirmed the Board’s firm commitment to supporting pharmacists across all areas of practice. “We are focused. We are listening. And I assure you—your concerns will be addressed through strong, responsive, and technically grounded leadership to make pharmacy thrive,” he said. Dr. Githinji highlighted key priorities currently driving the Board’s agenda: enforcement of Good Pharmacy Practices, proper scheduling and classification of medicines, and close engagement with the Health Products and Technologies (HPTs) Bill, which is presently before the Senate. “We are monitoring its progress to ensure that the voice of the pharmacy profession is reflected. Regulation is a core mandate of government, and I am personally committed to ensuring full implementation of the commitments we make,” he added. The session drew strong engagement from key PPB directorates—Health Products and Technologies, Corporate Services, and Pharmacy Practice—who outlined regulatory progress and ongoing reforms. Dr. Siyoi reiterated the Board’s dedication to raising regulatory standards across the country, noting that PPB is at an advanced stage in the journey toward achieving World Health Organization (WHO) Maturity Level 3 status. Panelists also spotlighted priority actions underway to strengthen service delivery and enhance patient safety. These include proactive post-marketing surveillance, capacity-building in pharmacovigilance, initiation of bioequivalence studies, and the development of regulatory frameworks to guide specialization in pharmacy practice. The session reinforced the Board’s position as a technically competent, stakeholder-driven institution working to secure a safe, responsive, and accountable pharmaceutical sector.

Aden Duale on Wednesday, 18th June 2025, opened the 45th Annual Scientific Conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya (PSK), calling on pharmacists to drive key reforms under the Taifa Care Universal Health Coverage (UHC) agenda. He outlined five priorities: boosting local manufacturing, achieving regulatory excellence, digitizing pharmaceutical systems, strengthening pharmacovigilance, and integrating pharmacy services into SHA’s benefits package. Hon. Duale announced the posting of 500 intern pharmacists from 1st August, elevation of Health Products and Technologies to a directorate, and warned against counterfeit drugs. He praised Mombasa County for fully digitizing its health system and urged PSK to champion innovation, accountability, and digital integration.
