Einstein’s Equations Allow Gravity to Turn Like a Vortex In 1937, Willem Jacob van Stockum found one of the early exact rotating-dust solutions of Einstein’s field equations. It was a strange lesson from General Relativity: Mass does not only bend Spacetime inward. If the source rotates strongly enough, the geometry around it can be dragged into rotation. Einstein’s equation is Gμν = 8πTμν. For pressureless dust, the matter source is Tμν = ρuμuν, where ρ is the mass density and uμ is the four-velocity of the rotating matter. In a rotating Spacetime, the metric can contain a mixed time-angle term, gₜφ dt dφ, and that term is the key visual idea here. It means time and angle are no longer cleanly separated. A particle trying to move “straight” through the geometry can inherit angular motion because the local inertial frames themselves are being twisted.
