WIP: "Stokeship" Huh. Some basics for as shown: - OD: 14m - Starlink-2's: ~15x - engines: 60x 0.5m-dia "Raptettes" - fuel volume: ~1400 tonnes - "chopstick compatible": YES! 60x Raptettes = same "nozzle area" as 9x Raptor-SL's, or just 2x Raptor-Vac's. A little more: 🧵 1/5

@Robotbeat Or rather: They finally found a PROFITABLE "sink" (computing) that could be brought to the "source" (space solar), and in huge quantity.

The first large bid for construction of the cooling water structures was awarded by #SPIC for its #Laiyang #NPP in #Shandong province. The plant is one of the candidate projects to be approved this year. The plant will be first equipped with two 1543 MW #CAP1400 rectors, and will ultimately host 6 of those reactors, making it one of the world's most powerful NPP projects currently under planning with a capacity of 9258 MW.

@Truthful_ast Put a New Glenn top stage on top of an expendable Starship and throw school buses at the moon for fun.

And Spitter was seriously thinking they’d get this all done in 1-2 years before SpaceX lmao Blue needs to just chill out to develop Mk2 as it’s an amazing lander, finish Transporter as it will revolutionize spaceflight, launch NG more, and perform orbital refuelling
Delta9250@deltaIV9250

Blue seems very focused on eliminating refueling as part of their “faster path” but the accelerated plan still needs about the same number of New Glenn launches (~4), and potentially requires developing a brand new lander. In the next 2 years.

@Robotbeat Oh that's fascinating. 50:1 rocket fuel : solar. So launching solar panels into space from the earth is no way to "save energy". It's not about that at all. Ergo the making-solar-panels-on-the-moon thing, I presume. (Do I follow correctly?)

@MattGialich Strong point. Asteroids means doing all the space civilization stuff, but without the launching and landing. Can get gravity by spinning around like 2001.

@eager_space @SciGuySpace A salty told me that this is why the Navy tends to prefer simple machinery that you have to maintain all the time, because otherwise, a few years go by and no one know what anything is, or how to even know it's busted, or how to fix it. (So yes, 100, Sir.)

@SciGuySpace This is where flight rate really comes back to bite you. If you fly all the time, your equipment always works and you know how to make it work. If you wait 3 years to fly, the equipment deteriorates and you forget how to make it work.

Yikes. NASA couldn’t even complete a test of the SLS rocket’s ground system seal for liquid hydrogen because something else broke with the ground systems. And they wait until 8 pm ET Friday to send an update on something they knew last night. nasa.gov/blogs/missions…

@Phrankensteyn @realTZV ...While solar and batteries are more diffuse and less inherently dangerous to get blown up. I don't know WHAT you Euro's are going to do without a big dang desert for solar. It's crazy. What was once a worthless p.i.t.a. becomes a vital resource.

@Phrankensteyn @realTZV > It's crazy how much China is having its foot on the nuclear brake, currently. Well, a NPP is such a big fat Tomahawk missile and/or sabotage target. So there's that.

@PaddyPatrone @BellikOzan > Having colonies on mars etc. just as a side effect is exactly what I want! That's exactly it. Take North America for instance. All the Crown wanted at first was the trees and the fish, but eventually they needed some people there to keep it going.

I really liked the Mars vision, but this much bigger one is the one I've been waiting for (well, K2 and beyond...) And the Mars vision hasn't gone away --it has just taken its place inside a bigger picture.

@SpaceHaxx @Phrankensteyn Ironically that flooding risk is one main argument against nuclear power plants inland in Hunan, Hubei and Jiangxi provinces. But also the cause why only the american AP1000 is approved for that plants.

@Phrankensteyn @realTZV Three Gorges Dam was a monstrously huge production. Thousands of people dislocated, all that habitat flooded, all that silt that someone will have to do something about, someday. And all that flooding risk! But just another nuclear plant? That's it? It's so much easier.

@Phrankensteyn @BellikOzan Not just that, but super-precise humongous glass mirrors are a known and solved technology. They take YEARS to settle into shape, and weigh a butt-ton, but Starship takes care of that butt-ton problem, that's for dang sure.

First of all, it's a very important stepping stone in terms of developing the logistics capability needed to become a true spacefaring civilization. Second, the space-based AI data centers are planned primarily for dawn-dusk SSO, which will have minimal impact on astronomy. Hours of untouched dark centered around midnight. Third, this is the kind of logistics capability needed to enable massive, large-scale, and affordable space-based astronomy better than anything we can do on the ground.
SLS@ScottLikedSLS

The completely not needed insistence on Space based AI data centers is going to literally destroy ground based astronomy. 15000 objects is already disruptive enough, let alone 70x that

@Phrankensteyn @BellikOzan JWST was entirely designed around the biggest rocket they had, the Ariane 5, which was also very expensive to use. A space telescope designed around Starship will be entirely different, and in a great way.

@Truthful_ast Once there's something that a protest movement can extract from SpaceX/BlueO by protesting space activity -- jobs, grants, funny money in other forms -- then exactly such a protest movement will magically materialize, overnight.
