@astro_pwise @jimalkhalili That's pretty cool. I didn't get the impression it was _crackpot_ theory - just one that didn't have strong observational support (even if it was technically within the error bars). Cool that we're getting to the point where we can actually test things properly!

@Spacetrombone @jimalkhalili Yes, although we finally are building datasets capable of testing these things -- like the evolving dark energy model that fits the DES and DESI data well!

Cosmologists, how seriously should we take this? I admit I haven’t looked into it yet - this is just an initial reaction to Andrew’s thread. It reminds me of MOND theories to replace dark matter (which of course fail to reproduce CMB spectrum).

This could be an incredible revolution in Cosmology. The Dark Energy model of the universe, which won a Nobel Prize in 2011, may be completely wrong. The accelerating expansion instead is simply because time runs faster in the voids between galaxies. Let me explain:

@astro_pwise @jimalkhalili I think I saw David Wiltshire talk on this when I was in NZ (~15-20 years ago) - I can't assess the details, but I get the impression it's a long running alt theory that's never gained traction, rather than a brand new revolutionary idea

Hi @Andercot, I was one of the co-leads of the Pantheon+ supernova analysis that these authors try to re-analyze here. I can say that this analysis is very confusing, and I can't see any piece of it that has statistical significance. Normally, if one tries to propose a new model, they show residuals to that model versus (our) best fit. In this analysis, a number of the parameters they release don't make any sense.

Because planes and helicopters don't move like an inch worm. Look at the last video; you can clearly see the manner in which it moves compared to the diagonal line created by the cabling. It accelerates and then stutters. Planes can't do this. Trained helicopter pilots can, but why would they? I can't imagine it would be too comfortable or serving a purpose in this scenario.

I’m open to being proven wrong, but extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

From the brief summary, PC archetypes are based on Māori roles and principles, and it looks like it might run like a Vaesen-style "deal with monsters" game, where direct conflict with the cursed beasties is not necessarily the best approach

I think one of my pet hates is placing the blame for dodgy game design on unspoken social expectations. MTG's Commander format, D&D 5e and World of Darkness are full of this. Games that are not designed well for how they are actually played but with a culture that blames players.

@focusfronting I enjoy how it goes from Boston like <100 km south to Providence, and then goes over a thousand km north-east over the entirety of Maine and New Brunswick to stop at Halifax.
