@mattyglesias No one in these comments, either pro- or anti-abortion, is addressing the point @wanye was making, that there are progressives who believe that SCIENCE says abortion is GOOD

@gonzalezharry @estherzelda0514 Read your last sentence again. You see behavior, which you view from a universalist moral framework rather than a consequentialist framework, and do not think through what a consequentialist moral framework actually looks like, and instead conclude that liberals just love evil.

Conservative brain can be interesting. They start with a deontological premise, that you must always do good, abortion is murder and therefore evil, you cannot have an abortion. They assume liberals use the same moral framework, except in reverse. They think we think that murder is good or even doing evil is better than doing good, so they get very confused and cannot understand how liberals reach the conclusions they do. When conservatives reason like this, it doesn't cross their mind that liberals are not, that we don't look for universal principles or rule-based ethics, and often reach conclusions from a consequentialist framework. Liberals think abortion is permissible because the alternative in a lot of cases is far worse. That's all that is going on. Which a conservative with a very deontological bent cannot see, so they project their own reasoning patterns on liberals and get wacky conclusions.
wanye@xwanyex

It’s my strong sense that the average liberal actually believes — like really believes on some level — that it’s a scientific fact that abortions are good. They’ve really gassed themselves up about their preferences.

@estherzelda0514 We can see it, we just think it is evil regardless of whether you think it’s not or don’t. We don’t assume you’re evil then use that to rationalize your behavior, we see your behavior and can’t reach any other conclusion than… you’re just evil worthless scum.

X.com Creation: Musk launched online financial services firm X.com using proceeds from his previous company, Zip2. The Merger: X.com merged with Confinity (led by Peter Thiel and Max Levchin) to combine their digital payment systems. Naming: The combined company was initially named X.com, but was officially renamed PayPal in 2001” When eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002, Musk was the company's largest shareholder and received $165 million from the sale”

@RidleyDM @xwanyex It's nonsense. That's the point. Liberals routinely think their inside-out moral assumptions are scientific facts even though it's a nonsensical category error.

Say you're a bush pilot flying food, clean water, and medicine to a remote town. One day, you decide you just don't feel like doing it. People in the town die because they didn't get meds in time. Are you responsible for those deaths? @ianbremmer says "obviously" no. I say yes.
ian bremmer@ianbremmer

i don’t accept the argument that if you cut foreign aid—even valuable, well targeted foreign aid (which some of usaid was)—you’re responsible for killing people. this should be obvious. so it will probably be controversial.

🚨ABSOLUTE MIC DROP FROM ELON ON DOGE!!!! Elon Musk: "ZERO died because of DOGE. Zero point zero!" "When funding is stopped for a fraudulent organization, or for something do you think they're going to say,"Will you please keep funding the fraud!' Or do you think they're going to come up with a sad story that sounds sympathetic in order to get the funding restored? Obviously it will be the latter and that's exactly what they did!!!" LIBERAL WHITE WOMAN: "The cuts certainly caused unnecessary suffering!" Elon Musk: "No." LIBERAL WHITE WOMAN: "You don't buy that at all?!" Elon Musk: "It caused a lot of complaining!" LIBERAL WHITE WOMAN: "You don't believe any kid in Africa died because of the suddenness with which... Elon Musk: Zero! How many NGOs could step in? There are literally tens of thousands of NGOs. The Gates Foundation has FIFTY BILLION! What about them? What about any number of organizations?!" ELON IS ON FIRE!!!!!!

Nothing in the clip you provided, says anything remotely like what you posted: Interviewer: People say that you’re a racist. What is the motivation for doing that? Are you fomenting this? Elon Musk: My partner is, she’s half-Indian, and I have four children with her. One of them was named after a famous Indian physicist. So I would say I’m not racist. And also if you look at the people that are employed at my companies, we have senior executives of all races. I don’t think there’s any racism there. Interviewer: Are you anti-Muslim? Elon Musk: I am against having people coming to a country with antithetical views. I am against that. I’m against rape and murder. I’m against the imposition of rules and laws that are contrary to what we’ve come to accept in the West. And I think it’s a crying shame that the sort of traditional media like you don’t recognise this.

Emily Wilson after watching the Odyssey: ‘The film presents an Odysseus who feels very bad about things that he's done in war, and is struggling to process them in a very modern, psychiatrised way – and needs drugs to do so! He seems to feel bad about being a warrior, and we never actually see him get to do much warrioring ... Nolan makes the protagonist a likeable, all-American hero; Homer's Odysseus wants glory, and he wants to get spoils from the sack of a city! I kept looking in vain for a sense that this was a film about glory. This is a film that has an interest in shame, but I don't think it has any interest in glory.’

It’s worth noting that I do not think any of this is solvable. Conservative academics made up about a third of faculty just a few decades ago, but there is no pipeline of conservative PhDs to hire anymore. I just think we all should be honest that this *is* in fact a problem!

Here’s the brass tacks question progressive academics seem to want to avoid answering: does anyone seriously believe that a geographer critical of immigration would be likely to be hired by an elite American university? Or would those views put them at a profound disadvantage? 1/
