On this day in 1968 - The battleship USS New Jersey (BB-62) was recommissioned in Philadelphia, returning from the "mothball fleet" to provide heavy shore bombardment in Vietnam. As the only U.S. battleship active during the war, it destroyed enemy targets with 16-inch guns until being decommissioned in December 1969. The ship was later recommissioned again in 1982 as part of Reagan's 600-ship Navy.
