Reminder: Putin can stop the war instantly by ordering his troops to withdraw from Ukraine. This would not require him to give up anything he is entitled to have or thwart any legitimate aim. Not morally or legally. Giving him anything is appeasement that will make things worse

@The_FJC When you say "American-protected trade routes", are you talking about the Straits of Hormuz? The one that was open and didn't need any protection until Trump closed it by starting a war he couldn't finish and is now begging Iran or the rest of the world to open again?

China’s economic rise depended on: American consumers, American markets, American-protected trade routes, and a global financial system anchored by the dollar. Then American elites called this arrangement “free trade.” One of the dumbest strategic decisions in modern history.

@BasedMikeLee @amuse The important points about Hitler and his NAZI party was that it was an authoritarian, racist, militaristic, expansionist, dictatorship. It wasn't remotely socialist. Hitler was just pressing buttons with the word. Like you are.

@HistoryBoomer Just because there is no black-and-white transition between two extremes, that does not mean that the extremes do not exist or there is no difference. Why is taxing people progressively more as they progressively benefit directly from the efforts of others unreasonable?

You start a burger joint: Boomer Burgers. You hire 10 people to run it, and it makes money. Ok? You branch out and build 2 more joints. You make more money. You keep building new BBs. Dozens. Hundreds. Thousands. At what point does the money you're making become "unearned"?
Marco Foster@MarcoFoster_

AOC: “There’s a certain level of wealth and accumulation that is unearned. You can’t earn a billion dollars. You just can’t earn that. You can get market power, you can break rules, you can abuse labor laws, you can pay people less than what they’re worth, but you can’t earn that”

@RealJamesWoods If there was any real evidence, Trump's FBI would have brought the case and his SCOTUS would have convicted them. That is how you know that there is no real evidence, and how easy it is to lie on a talk show. Should the director of the FBI be lying on a talk show?

So why aren’t you arresting these people for treason? I don’t know which is more frustrating, to know that Democrats literally staged a coup against the President of the United States, or to know that the Federal Bureau of investigation can’t find a single person to indict.
Wall Street Apes@WallStreetApes

FBI Director Kash Patel talks about what he’s proved Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama did “It took me 2 years of my life to prove the following, that a political party in the United States of America in the 21st century would go overseas and hire some bogus intelligence asset to manufacture fraudulent, fake unverified information. Funnel that to not just the intelligence community, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and then take those package lies that they had paid for with campaign finance funds, and go into a secret surveillance court and illegally spy on your opponent to be the next president of the United States. I think that was 45 seconds. That took two years of my life. And what did we find out? The FISA court themselves came back and said these warrants were illegal, that the FBI did not provide evidence of exculpatory evidence and innocence, and that the FBI essentially lied in those applications.” It was a coup. It was literally treason and not a single people has been held accountable. Think about that ZERO accountability even when the FBI Director has proven evidence of treason This is where we are….

@DrDiGiorgio I am in the UK and am well off , so I can still pay for private healthcare and jump the queues. The NHS is the floor, not the ceiling.

This is the ultimate midwit healthcare take. No, 32 countries have not “figured out” universal healthcare. The UK has “free” healthcare, and roughly 1 in 3 cancer patients in England still fail to start treatment within 62 days of urgent referral. Canada has “free” healthcare, and the median wait for neurosurgical treatment is around a year. Australia has “free” healthcare, and over half the country still buys private insurance despite paying for a public universal system with their taxes. Switzerland has universal coverage, because residents are required to buy private insurance. There is no government system where benevolent bureaucrats tuck you in at night with a warm blanket and an MRI appointment. The actual lesson from other wealthy countries is not “they figured it out.” America’s system has huge problems. Our prices are insane, insurance markets are distorted, and hospital systems are cartelized. Our regulations make care more expensive than it needs to be. Yet we still guarantee access to even the 8% who don’t have coverage. We give easy routes to qualify for medicaid for those with disabilities. Pretending the rest of the world solved healthcare because they slapped the word “universal” on a rationing scheme is not analysis. It is bumper sticker policy for people who think access means having a card in your wallet while you wait a year to see the doctor you need.
daz@MetamateDaz

Free Universal Healthcare is so complicated and expensive that only 32 of the 33 wealthiest countries in the world have figured it out.

@MichaelAArouet Quite apart from the fact that an "In-N-out manager in California" is not at all representative of "fast food job in the US" In the US you have to pay for yourself for a load of stuff that in France or Germany (or most developed countries) companies pay for through taxation.

This is eye-opening. A fast food job in the US pays significantly more than AI developer jobs in France or Germany, which have higher salaries than most other European countries. Europeans simply don’t notice how poor they become compared to others. Choices have consequences.

@stjamestheright @heterodoxan By the way, I hope you are not trying to imply all guilt in the US (or any other legal system I know about) is decided by a jury? That would be either ignorance or deceit. Yeah. I think I see you now.

Of course you’re right. I’ve come to realize our two societies are no longer based on the same Western values. Funny enough, the bulk of those values — like property rights, innocence until proven guilty by a jury of your peers, free speech — came from the UK where each is under attack and being forgotten. Shame.

It's actually absurd how many Europeans fail to grasp that denying us the use of those bases for operations in Iran, which is a more immediate threat to Europe than to us, made even a lot of US fans of NATO wonder what we're doing in Europe anymore.
Andrea Junker@Strandjunker

US troops are not in Germany to protect Germany. They’re there because the US needs bases to conduct operations beyond the North American continent. If Trump withdraws them, he will harm the United States, not Germany. It’s absurd how many Americans fail to grasp this.

@anders_aslund It is sad, because SCOTUS should indeed be above having to defend itself against such base accusations. When the system for picking its members was devised, it was assumed Presidents and Congress would act honourably and select judges based on their merit, not their politics.

It amazes me that the US Supreme Court that has been proven to be massive corrupt in no way tries to defend itself. Does SCOTUS consider it fine to be corrupt? Say something! Get decent!

@stjamestheright @heterodoxan Nobody is attacking those rights in the UK. The laws around juries are being slightly adjusted - none of the others. I can explain that if you like. You have no actual evidence to support all the other claims do you? You are being lied to.

@Spajjer @stjamestheright Maybe I read the news when it was happening, and you're deluded. No one put the US Army in the streets, either. The National Guard was deployed to cities with out of control riots and overwhelmed police. ICE isn't the army either, they're specialized law enforcement.

@stjamestheright @heterodoxan Our laws only prohibit speech that is an incitement to violence or slander. If you think there is a UK law that does otherwise please provide a link (to the actual legislation - not a social media story) I would be interested. If it’s not incitement to violence, defamation or slander, speech should be free. Full stop. Go hide behind your mother’s apron if you can’t handle being free. We’re clearly not the same, and it’s why I absolutely love my country and feel blessed to live here. Define “hate” speech.

@Spajjer @stjamestheright Attacking police by grabbing them or driving into them, or vandalizing property, isn't peaceful. Those things are crimes. But you lot want people in jail for mean words, and the police run away when attacked. You don't see a problem there, so your opinion is invalid.

@heterodoxan You are dreaming. Meanwhile, the freedom of the press in the US is being chipped away at and the Justice Department is being used (ineptly) to try to intimidate an ex head of the FBI because he dared to say something bad about Trump. Dream on, and watch your democracy die.
