I often wonder how much of our precious wildlife is indiscriminately killed on our roads. Accurately logging everything would be nigh on impossible but if you do see a carcass it would be great if you could take a minute to log it here. P.S. 6000 reported in 2025, and 200 last wk
The Road Lab@TheRoadLab

The weekly #roadkillreport is out! We received 200 reports last week, with the most common report being pheasants. We received 2 unusual reports, a pine marten and a collared dove. Thank you to everyone who submitted reports this week. #roadkill #ukecology #citsci

@TonyJuniper We all of us, have a choice between action and in inaction. Though I am convinced that IF we truly want to help the survival of these and other species and are prepared to look openly and objectively at the challenge of the situation that the necessary measures will be clear.

If we are to halt & reverse decline of the Curlew then difficult subjects must be tackled, including the high density of predators we have across the country - including foxes, crows & badgers. All wonderful creatures as well, but too many is a big issue for ground nesting birds.

Curlew Action were part of an expert panel which gave a briefing to parliamentarians on the importance of the recently launched UK Curlew Action Plan. See my blog on what was said... @CHinchliffMP @CurlewCountry curlewaction.org/parliamentary-…

What is the gravest ecological challenge? Global heating, mass extinction, pollution? My new book, ‘Just Earth’, published by @BloomsburyBooks & which is out in March, suggests it’s actually social inequalities.

@TrooperSnooks Think the only people who are anything like off the target list are themselves and the unions, and the rest of us are in their sights.

Ok Twitter hive-mind (pun intended). I’m hopeless at identifying #insects. This is clearly a bee of some sort I think? A honey bee or something else? It’s very red/orange in colour. I await your wisdom….

Two close encounters. Working in the garden after tea, bent over & looking down with head about 4 ft from the ground only to see a sparrow hawk fly under my nose in pursuit of a blackbird! Then walking to the polling station I saw a barn owl and called it in to within 20 feet.

@des_farrand Yes, saw one pop up a few years back during a very dry summer. It popped up and was on the surface trying to get back underground but couldn’t break the sun baked surface, so I grabbed a spade and broke the surface to help. It worked and it went back on its way.

Serious Question. Has anybody seen a mole pop up out of a mole hill?
