The gospel of Christ is not about falling in line. It’s about falling in love. Externally imposed rules generate either rebellion or hypocrisy, either open hostility toward God or religious pretending about God. WHAT IS THE BIBLE? On one level, the Bible is a story, a big narrative arc that lands in the magnificent person of Christ. On the next level, tightly woven with this narrative, the Bible is a relational psychology textbook, a series of existential case studies that all find both their thesis and antithesis in Christ. Then, on another level, singing to us in whispered non-coercive tones through all its dramatic, tragic pages, the Bible is a love call, a beckoning, a wooing to every individual heart to their find personal identity in the Christ who is the center and circumference of the whole torrid affair of the human quest for love.
