Most jobs still want in-person interviews, so now you’re paying for trips before you even know if you’re hired. And lower cost of living areas usually pay lower wages too, so your $2,500 income / $1,800 rent situation just becomes $1,700 income / $1,200 rent. Then you need apartment applications, deposits, first month’s rent, utility deposits, internet setup, gas, food, and a U-Haul to move everything you own hundreds of miles. Moving is expensive. If someone is already barely surviving paycheck to paycheck, where exactly are they supposed to magically get thousands of dollars to relocate? People aren’t “lazy” because they can’t afford to uproot their entire life on a gamble.
