@CliveMyrieBBC A painful night for us Blues. Congrats on your very even handling of announcing the bleak results. I can only hope Pep may yet stay...

@AmyDesigns @fasc1nate You're so right. I worked on an event with him and had the privilege of visiting his Paris studio. He said after the barbarity he had covered, he made a conscious decision to focus on the positive in his photography and of course the project. A new life indeed for a lovely man.

@fasc1nate Once seen, his giant photographs of kids working in mines cannot be forgotten. I've often thought how this new forest must have virtually given him a new life, bringing back his spirit too.

In the early 1990s, Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado was stationed in Rwanda to cover the genocide, an experience that left him traumatized. In 1994, upon returning to his home in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Sebastião hoped to find solace in the lush green forest of his childhood. Instead, he discovered that his home had transformed into a dusty, barren land stretching for miles, devoid of any wildlife. "The land was as sick as I was. Only about 0.5% of the land was covered in trees," he remarked. At this time, his wife, Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado, proposed that they embark on the ambitious journey of replanting the entire forest. Sebastião supported the idea, and together, over the course of the next 20 years, they planted an astonishing 2.7 million trees. Their efforts resulted in the rejuvenation of 1,500 acres of rainforest, and the site eventually became home to 293 plant species, 172 bird species, and 33 animal species, some of which were on the brink of extinction. @SohoGeorge Ah, the Roundhouse. In the mid 70s it had a second bar upstairs. Used to sneak up there aged 15 and an Irish barman named Mike used to supply us with illicit pints. Good times!

Written in November 1944, this letter from Chaim Herman to his wife and child was discovered after the war, buried by the remains of the Auschwitz-Birkenau gas chambers. It is read here by Jason Isaacs.

And so it’s time for sleep and remember people: if you’re working tomorrow, you’ll need to work a bit harder after the budget because the government will take more money off you and give it to people who need it most. Those who don’t work, for instance. Nighty night.

Alpinista and Luke Morris win the 2022 Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe. This was one of the few times that I have had accreditation on a racecourse so thank you to France Galop for that. I still appreciate it to this day. It makes an awful lot of difference having the trackside access to optimise photography opportunities and this day I was fortunate to have it. It is an extremely wide track at Longchamp and I could have done with a longer lens than the 70-200mm that I was using but was happy with this image given the conditions. Two things that stick out in my memory are the extremely heavy downpour immediately preceding the race when we all got absolutely drenched…….and how well Alpinista was travelling turning in, swinging off the bridle, revelling in the conditions. I loved being on the track to greet the winner after the race, and enjoy the celebrations, and I will always remember the day very very fondly. A great experience.

Faldo has been outstanding this week. He seems to have ditched the weak attempts at comedy and the need to say “smidgen” every other sentence. Instead he has provided brilliant insight throughout his Sky stints👏👏
