The connections between the Igbo people and Jewish traditions are a rich blend of history, culture, and oral memory. While some aspects are debated among scholars, many practices and beliefs strongly suggest a shared or parallel heritage. Here’s a breakdown of the most notable links: 1. Monotheism and Religious Practices •The Igbo traditionally worship Chukwu, the Supreme God, who is seen as the creator of all things. This mirrors the Jewish concept of a singular, all-powerful God. •Igbo religious practice historically emphasized purity, moral law, and obedience to divine commandments, akin to the observance of mitzvot in Judaism. 2. Rituals and Festivals •Circumcision: Many Igbo communities practice male circumcision, often on the eighth day—similar to the Jewish tradition of Brit Milah. •Festivals: Igbo festivals often coincide with harvest cycles and seasonal changes, echoing Jewish festivals like Sukkot and Passover, which celebrate agricultural milestones and liberation. 3. Dietary Customs •Traditional Igbo taboos against eating certain animals or combining specific foods resemble kashrut, the Jewish dietary laws. •Though not identical, the principle of ritual purity in food is a clear parallel. 4. Language and Names •Some Igbo words and names have meanings that align with Hebrew linguistic roots. For example, names reflecting covenant, promise, or blessing (like Chinedu—“God leads”) echo the Hebrew emphasis on divine guidance in naming. •Certain ritual phrases and greetings bear phonetic resemblance to Hebrew prayers, which has intrigued linguistic anthropologists. 5. Ancestral Veneration and Lineage •The Igbo place strong emphasis on family, lineage, and ancestral respect, which parallels the Jewish focus on tribes, patriarchs, and matriarchs. •The Igbo concept of umu-ada (daughters of the lineage) and ndichie (elders) is reminiscent of Jewish tribal leadership and the role of elders in spiritual guidance. 6. Ethical Codes and Social Laws •Igbo societies historically had codes of conduct emphasizing honesty, justice, and community responsibility, much like Jewish Halakha, which governs daily life and ethics. •Both societies historically discouraged idolatry and emphasized moral accountability. 7. Oral Tradition and Storytelling •Like Jewish communities, Igbo culture has preserved history, law, and morality through oral tradition, proverbs, and parables, which serve as moral and spiritual instruction across generations. 8. Identity and Diaspora Awareness •Some Igbo communities historically claimed origins “from the East” or a migratory past, echoing the Jewish awareness of diaspora and ancestral homeland. •After the transatlantic slave trade, many Igbo enslaved in the Americas retained fragments of cultural and spiritual practices, similar to how Jewish customs persisted through dispersion. Taken together, these cultural, religious, and social parallels suggest more than coincidence. While not all Igbo people identify as Jewish today, these connections offer a source of pride, resilience, and identity affirmation, especially when reclaiming heritage in the face of centuries of oppression.

This idea that the west is bad and the Middle East are good is very wrong and unacceptable. As an African, I do not have any shared destiny with both sides. Both committed slavery, imported religion, exploited us and continued to treat us less. If you put there actions on Africans side by side, you’d see that both are evil and harmful to our collective existence. However, having experienced both, we have seen what they’re capable of bringing upon us if given opportunity.

@DavidHundeyin @realJudebela Another thing many Nigerians don’t understand is sovereignty and national responsibility. A country cannot be strong if its people are mentally weak, always waiting for the same foreign powers that once colonized their ancestors to come and save them.

First of all, "Middle East" is a broad descriptor for a region that has both Saudi Arabia and Iran, which are at extreme ends of the ideological/imperial spectrum. Modern Iran is a country born out of, and built entirely around anti-imperial revolution, while Saudi Arabia and the UAE are direct US/Israeli vassal states with US military bases on their soil. So when you say "Middle East," which one are you referring to? Second, if I assume you're referring to Iran (since Saudi, UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain etc have no independent foreign policy of their own), you'll have to explain where and when Iran ever did anything to you as a Nigerian or as an African. Is Iran the country sponsoring terrorism in your country so that it can grab your minerals for free? Is Iran the country that instigated a civil war in your country that left 3 million people from your ethnic group dead? Is Iran the country that facilitated multiple coups in your country so that it could gradually seize control over your entire governance structure and become the biggest beneficiary of your own resources? Did Iran assassinate your sitting head of state on at least one occasion? Has Iran spent decades pressuring your government to allow it to build a foreign military base on your soil? Did Iran carry out a regime change operation in your country after you had just become Africa's largest economy growing at 7% annually, and replace your PhD president with a semi literate who made it shed half its GDP in 8 years? Did Iran install a drug dealer as your president and then protect him from disclosure with its court system for the past 4 years? Did Iran impose Structural Adjustment Programs on your economy and make your currency lose 99.7% of its value between 1986 and 2025? Did Iran take away all your best brains after destroying your economy and make them drive buses and work in care homes in Iran? And if Iran did none of these things to you but the other side did, then what exactly is your problem with Iran?

@DavidHundeyin @realJudebela Instead of blindly repeating what politicians, media, or religious leaders say, Nigerians should research and understand international politics. Countries like Iran, Syria, and Iraq have also suffered from wars, foreign interference, and struggles over resources

@DavidHundeyin @realJudebela As a Nigerian, I ask a simple question: what have Iranians actually done to Nigerians that makes some people hate them or accuse them of things without evidence? Many people just follow religious narratives instead of learning the truth.

Psalm 122:6 (ESV): “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! ‘May they be secure who love you!’”
This is a direct biblical encouragement to pray for Jerusalem (the heart of Israel), with a promise of security or prosperity for those who do. Christians often see this as a call to intercede for Israel’s well-being and peace.
