The Essendon job is Hird’s if he wants it, he will get first right of refusal before any ‘process’ starts. If he agrees and announces he’s interested there will not even be a process because there will be no other applicants. Prospective coaches know they could never survive in the job with him waiting in the wings.

In some ways its a pretty genius approach from James HIrd. The process of likely strong candidates just halved by Hird pitching for the role on national tv. Yes he calls for the coaching process to be thorough but it wont be with many candidates now pulling out

Ridley wanting out isn’t about the coach. It’s about three years of injury as detailed here. Suns and Dons both keen on him. Essendon interested in Joel Jeffrey but Suns adamant he is happy and invested. He is also contracted. Dons have tried everything with Ridley. Has never put his hand up to be an assistant coach and only senior coach and that was a disaster. It says coaching isn’t his passion, just being Essendon coach is. He can’t possibly be the best qualified candidate with his lack of experience compare to others. Why do you think it would work?
