OPINION | "How do we live in these strange times in which destiny has placed us? And how... can we actually make something meaningful and transformative out of the convulsive times in which we live?" By @Spokoiny, CEO of @jfunders ejphil.com/4v9k4

This is somebody who apparently thinks that it’s ok that Jews should need to go through harassment and verbal (and sometimes physical) violence when they go to their places of worship. Protesting 50 yards away will not be enough harassment. That’s the logic. Let that sink in.

A buffer zone around a synagogue as an obstacle to protests being disruptive (something protests are supposed to do) would do nothing to stop someone intent on murdering people

Now is good time for every New Yorker to remember those who opposed buffer zones around places of worship.

There's no question someone in the White House told Trump to call the war in Iran an "incursion," but he heard it as "excursion" and now he keeps calling it that - making the war sound like a holiday getaway - because no one around him ever corrects him when he makes a mistake.

Leadership in New York requires the ability to hold multiple truths at once. The mayor is entitled to his views on this matter, even though I strongly disagree with Mahmoud Khalil’s rhetoric, which many Jewish New Yorkers have experienced as contributing to a climate of hostility. But the mayor is no longer a candidate; he is now the mayor of the most diverse city in the world and must be seen as a mayor for all New Yorkers, which includes close to 1 million Jews. If our democracy affords Mahmoud Khalil due process rights, as it should, then those same democratic principles must also extend to the civil rights of students and staff to study and work in an environment free from hate, intimidation, and harassment. We cannot be selective about whose rights we defend. Federal civil rights investigators in the Biden administration found evidence that the civil rights of Jewish students at Columbia University were violated repeatedly and that the university failed to adequately respond to a hostile environment of antisemitic harassment. If the mayor truly cares about ensuring democratic protections apply to all New Yorkers, then he should also give an audience at Gracie Mansion to the very Columbia University Jewish students whose Title VI civil rights violations were substantiated by federal investigators in President Biden’s administration. Their stories deserve to be heard so that no student, in any educational setting, is ever forced to endure hate and intimidation again. Leadership in this moment requires moral clarity and a commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of every New Yorker, which includes the Jewish community.
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

For Mahmoud Khalil, this past year has been marked by profound hardship—and by profound courage. A year ago, Mahmoud was walking home through our city after sharing an iftar with his wife Noor when he was detained by federal agents, flown to Louisiana, and then held in an ICE facility for months. In that time, he was forced to miss the birth of his first child. All of this for exercising his First Amendment rights in protesting the ongoing genocide in Palestine. And yet, even in the face of that cruelty, there has also been beauty. New Yorkers raising their voices in solidarity. A city refusing to look away. Mahmoud won his freedom, and a father was finally reunited with his child. Last night, as we marked the one year anniversary of his detention, Rama and I were honored to welcome Mahmoud, Noor, and their son Deen to Gracie Mansion to break our fast together. Mahmoud is a New Yorker, and he belongs in New York City.

@Yair_Rosenberg Yair, the sad truth is that Trump is "attacking" Carlson now (and with silk gloves for his standards) only because Carlson attacked him. When Carlson attacked the Jews Trump didn't deign to respond.

The destruction of the ancient Jewish state happened because Jews asked the superpower (Rome) to intervene against their internal rivals. You can’t make this up. Likud minister renews plea for Trump to sanction Israel's AG & chief justice timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry…

@DavidLBernstein The worst far fright ppl appropriated the term "patriotic"-& now libs don't use it. This is like "only 37% of Jews say they're Zionsts" but if you dig deeper, 89% support Israel's right to exits as a Jewish state -which is the definition of Zionism. It's the term, not the feeling

@DavidLBernstein They believe that, for example, opposing ICE is patriotism bc it protects something precious about America. They are patriotic, they just define patriotism differently - or use a different word. That's a cheap attack, unrelated to reality.

@Spokoiny Patriotism is separate from the bad stuff either party does. Just because some R'a crap on American values doesn't excuse D's for lack of patriotism. It def makes it harder to win elections.

@DavidLBernstein I'm not talking about Dems or Reps but abt words with no meaning. It's rich to say that Dems "lost their patriotism" when u have Tucker & JD Vance consistently shitting on America. Dems are not unpatriotic, they're rebelling about the hijacking of that word by unpatriotic people
