While America intended to use economic pressure and diplomacy, if Greenland refused (not the best move), Greenland claimed America was going to seize it, escalating the situation out of control. This prompted reporters to ask the White House whether military action was off the table; the White House said no options were off the table. The Europeans sent six troops because it was never a serious threat to Greenland; they knew it. The whole thing was performative, pushing a narrative of fear that might increase public demand for further federalisation of the EU and heighten the general mistrust of America in the growing wave of Anti-American sentiment, which is wholly irrational. Seeming to support Trump's assertion that Europe isn't battle-ready, the world is a dangerous place, and that European nations need to step up more and do more for themselves and their people. The left-leaning Europhile leaders didn't like this because Trump said it, having a history of personal attacks on them before 2016. They did everything to hurt Trump, and in the process irreparably damaged relationships with the US while throwing Europeans under the bus of multiculturalism, “green” policy and short-sighted economic decisions.
