let the record show that as of april 2024 i predict miley cyrus will repeat the taylor swift phenomenon — absurdly sold out world tour, driving local economies, girls obsessed on social media for years. new album coming out and the same amount of generational prep time.

Drake’s voice was cloned and his lyrics reworked in the AI song "Heart On My Sleeve". His label had the song pulled from TikTok and Spotify – that’s 20th century IP law vs 21st century tech. Story offers a software-native solution: programmable rights from day one.

Does anyone else feel the increasing loneliness from AI that social media also inadvertently produced? This is going to be a total rant about the current state of AI and creativity, but I'm curious if anyone has genuine thoughts or feels a similar way To start off... A couple months ago, I watched the "Yacht Rock" documentary on Amazon Prime. It walks through the mid-70s to early 80s when bands like Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, and Toto popularized a soft rock, smooth soul/jazz music style (here's Michael McDonald playing my favorite song - "Takin' It To The Streets") The documentary was amazing. Admittedly, this is partly because these are my favorite bands of all time. But also because the doc interviewed and talked a lot about how the popularity of Yacht Rock was defined by the collaboration of "session artists" during that era. Session musicians floated between bands, bringing their soul and skill to countless tracks. They'd collaborate and travel with each other. Session musicians added so much of their soul and emotion to their songs, often opening up about their struggles & hardships in life, relationships, with family, and more These session artists performed with each other across bands to make incredibly written and performed music. Vocalists like Michael McDonald not only led the Doobie Brothers but sang in the background of Christopher Cross' "Ride like the Wind", originally played keyboard in Steely Dan, and co-wrote "What a Fool Believes" with Kenny Loggins... a song that was born because Kenny happened to overhear Michael riffing the intro melody to the song on his piano when he walked up to his door for a visit Steve Porcaro, a session keyboardist for Toto, wrote "Human Nature" - a song later included on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album, which majorly popularized MTV in the early 80s Today's music is quite different: while artists are still seen featured on each other's albums, it is a focus on the solo artist and their vocals rather than the "band" and musical collaboration. Even more common are songs that have 1 beat looped over the whole time to optimize for 15-second catchy tiktok clips. To me, these soft rock/jazzy songs are so incredible because of their innate soul and connection to human emotion. You feel the history & meaning behind the lyrics, the passion of the band, and the collaboration between the session artists. You can tell that the lyrics stem from a real experience by the artists, something that has helped me in tough times to feel seen & heard. Each musician that contributed to these songs of the mid 70s had been through and connected with the emotion in the songs they played, and are quasi-preaching to you through song This creativity & collaboration continued into the 80s and 90s, with prime examples being Warren G's popular rap song "Regulate" that featured the background melody of Michael McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin'". Or even more modern, Thundercat featuring McDonald and Kenny Loggins on "Show You The Way" on SNL. Human emotion, genuineness, and hard work are more important than we think they are. I think there's a reason old movies and music have a unique vibe beyond blaming it simply on "nostalgia" (take Stranger Thing's popularity as an example). It represents an era of human creativity that was completely disconnected from things like social media, which studies often show tend to amplify loneliness, comparison, judgment, and increasing insincerity INSTEAD of genuine companionship Furthermore, social media itself has completely changed priority. What once was 20 minute YouTube deep dives on a certain topic has now become a hyper-optimized machine of clickbait to get views and likes. It's a strange paradox: in a world where we are seemingly closer than ever, we are farthest apart This isn't to say social media or the modern era lacks creativity. In fact, I think creativity is at an all-time high. Everyone is encouraged to be a content creator now. And everyone CAN be! You can make unbelievably beautiful images by laying on the couch in your underwear and blabbing a prompt into ChatGPT (the Studio Ghibli thing was nuts). But in an era of complete content abundance, what matters most is the input and preservation of new human knowledge and intellectual property And more importantly, the monetization of human knowledge and IP as a mechanism to preserve it I remember a couple years ago I asked an artist on Fiverr to make an anime-style PFP for me for my Twitch account. I wanted to be a gaming streamer at the time (still do 🤣). I paid the artist $40, and admired the result for a long time because it felt meaningful to have someone look at a picture of me and craft a drawing for a few hours. I sent it to my friends & family thinking it was super cool What do you think happened to these artists? To be blunt: they're completely fucked. Now, I generate an infinitely better version using ChatGPT in seconds, totally for free. But it doesn't feel as special to me. At the same time, it frustrates me that the initial reaction to AI is to, for example, replace human marketing. "Make a Twitter bot!" "Make an AI-generated influencer!" Is that something I want? Do humans want to be pitched by an AI Agent that hasn't had any real experience or emotion? Maybe they do? Or what about the Studio Ghibli movies? I have watched all of them, and as a kid, each one presented to me a new meaning of life, of experience, of love, of appreciation. Communicated through the storytelling & beautiful art. Would it give me the same effect if the movie was entirely AI generated? Some people argue that because AI is trained on human experiences, then the outputs are an extension of that too. An AI generated movie reflects real human thought because it had to train on it. But I'm not fully convinced of this yet (and maybe i'm just being naive) All of this said, it's probably surprising to hear that I do love AI and think it does incredible things. I use it every day to code and research, and my daily life would be 100x less-informed and 100x more time-consuming without it. And it provides those with the most creative minds to have access to god-like tools, something that has never been done so easily before But as we inevitably go down this path of content abundance, of top-tier content generated in the blink of an eye, yet at the same time a destruction of incentives for real human output... we MUST at least reward creators for their content The social media paradox presents itself again, but for AI: in a world of content abundance, we are desperately grasping for content If we don't provide incentives to creators, we will find ourselves in a "tragedy of the commons" where AI has no new human input because no one has incentive to create And as a result, we will drown in a bland AI wasteland that has mastered the current human landscape This is why I am so passionate about my work and feel so lucky to be at @StoryProtocol. I get to work on something that I truly believe is solving an existential crisis for creatives in the modern era We need to provide a legal system that programmatically INCENTIVIZES and MONETIZES collaboration & creativity by being available for AI at its level... in code. Maybe what feels so depressing about the current state of AI is the "impending doom" that is creator despair. It's clear AI is going to be able to produce anything in the next decade. Instead of preventing it, how can we celebrate this god-like tool AND preserve/reward the novelty of human intelligence? If we don't, I believe that human creativity and genuineness will be truly lost to the abyss
