Customers getting a shirt should pay for it. Customers getting a lamp should pay for it. Customers using internet service should pay for it. How about... 🥁🥁🥁 Customers using car infrastructure should pay for it.

Just got off the phone with a friend who's a climate scientist. Zhe is terrified, because the latest measurements show South Asian sea slugs have grown 0.1 mm since the last measurements five years ago. These increases are unprecedented and much higher than expected. Climate scientists are afraid to even share this information with the public for fear of causing mass panic.

What they don't tell you is that you first have to drive to the train station, pay to park, wait for the train, travel, find some way to your destination that costs more money and then do it again in reverse When you could have driven it yourself in the same amount of time

Nine out of ten flights United canceled out of Des Moines could easily be served by fast trains, but we didn’t invest in fast trains because we have planes that we canceled.

@billybinion It's the trend of higher spending and taxes and new fees people have to pay like the upcoming parking permits that will probably happen. or the congestion charge

@Car_Free_USA It's not really the tax but the trend. Keep raising budgets and new taxes and revenue sources every year

@_fat_ugly_rat_ New York is such a laughingstock. They love to lecture everyone on climate change while making it illiegal to build solar and getting destroyed by Texas' renewable energy

@aaron_renn One huge advantage of the suburbs applies to youth sports. Both of my children do competitive sports (yes, I know there are drawbacks) and the facilities that are offered in the suburbs are simply miles ahead of urban areas due to availability of space, cost, etc.

This is why suburbs are in fact more efficient than cities in some way. You need fewer, more centralized facilities to provide coverage vs. the need for more, distributed facilities in the city. Applies to many things.
Dion@2024dion

The suburbs are replacing neighborhood amenities with regional amenities. It’s cheaper per capita and they can give them higher end features, but something is lost when you can no longer walk/drive a couple minutes to get to your local pool, soccer field, etc. a world less child friendly

@aaron_renn This is a thing in older suburbs with no HOA's. No real need for smaller pools. Larger HOA's will have their own gyms, pools, etc

Some cities on the left side are growing the budget faster than inflation every year and aggressively raising taxes and revenue. Makes you wonder if they are a few years behind Chicago and the cities in the bottom right
Stuart Loren@StuLoren

For comparison, I compiled pension data for top US cities and plotted funding ratios against unfunded liabilities as percent of city operating budgets and GDPs. No surprise: Chicago scores quite poorly! And that doesn't even include the teachers pension. Not sustainable...

If you believe some people then this is happening because cities are somehow subsidizing the suburbs

@unusual_whales Some people should learn to cut their own grass, plant their own flowers, and fix some things around the house by themselves. Might save some money

Having a gas stove carries risks similar to living with a smoker. I put a NO monitor next to our gas stove and one in a bedroom. The exposure near the gas stove—where our faces are—was thirteen times higher. Induction isn’t just safer. It’s a better technology for cooking.
Sammy Roth@Sammy_Roth

Insane new research. Scientists gave asthma patients free electric stoves to replace their gas stoves, then checked to see if symptoms improved. Not only did symptoms improve, ditching gas was *better than medicine.* Details in today's newsletter: climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/electric-sto…
