@paul_hundred He’d have been quietly fragged in Vietnam in 1971… ‘It’s over sir, let’s just not patrol and say we did…’ ‘Fuck that. I am a servant of Sacred Mars, and my god must be fed with blood….’ 😅😭

@paul_hundred Unshaven Custer, much more than mustachioed Custer, gives a greater sense of his lower enlisted-facing command physiognomy: ‘I don’t doubt our commander’s courage, but I also doubt whether he gives af whether he lives or dies, and I think he might get me killed…’ 😅

Mathews meets Tasos Meneshian, an Athenian polyglot-palimpsest of modern Levantine history. Like many working class men in that part of the world, his analysis of current affairs cuts through the noise; Syria: “Now, Erdogan and Israel own it.” The growth of Greece’s Arab and

Generally speaking I don't believe people seriously regret having kids. What they mean is that they are, for various reasons, finding life difficult, & constructing an idealised counterfactual in which Things Would Have Been Better in various speculative & unfalsifiable ways.

@MyopicEeyore @CityBureaucrat MGT timed her “principled resignation” from the House for the five-year tenure mark, which entitled her to an (admittedly pretty small) lifetime Congressional pension and health benefits. That’s what honor means, frankly. That’s a public servant.

I don't get the resigning in protest thing, though it's consistent with the purity spiral stand on business approach to boomer protest politics. You're supposed to hunker down and subvert, like the bureaucrat who, while the ashes were raining down from vesuvius, didn't leave his post because Obama forgot to tell him it was over. That is what it means to be a thoroughbred.

@CptHastings1916 Always floored at how common it is for these people to file the claim *the next business day* after the incredibly suspicious death, which ofc just nudges an investigatory ball that was already rolling. They can’t even wait a week or two. The love of money is the root etc etc

Double Indemnity is indeed great. Re. murders for insurance money, presumably there's a selection effect at work bcs we don't hear about the successful ones, but they all seem so bad at it. I've mentioned before the one I heard where the guy was an experienced police detective & still googled something like "How to make a murder look like suicide".
Steve Sailer@Steve_Sailer

@BDSixsmith Pretty much all murders that make the True Crime shows in America are motivated by life insurance. This wife's plan to garner $2 million is about the most ambitious I've seen. All Americans should be forced to watch "Double Indemnity" so they fear insurance adjustors' acumen.

criminals who belong to a regime-protected class. ‘There are no innocents in [Insert DC’s Current Target] + ‘Congressman Heartland’s Tweet About Iryna Zarutska/Islam/etc Was an Inflammatory Dogwhistle’ is very much A Type, at least in the Acela policy Corridor.

A somewhat related note: I often suspect that if such a thing could be measured, we’d find a large Venn Overlap of Westerners who paint in starkly moralizing black & white when rendering overseas interventionism, but revert to shades of grey on, say, domestic terror attacks or

One very tiresome genre of response to this is to say with s sort of faux high-mindedness "Oh well I'm so sorry you have to spend another tenner to fill up your car when 30,000 people have been massacred!" That is not the trade-off under discussion here.

Was thinking a lot last weekend of the closing stave of this Christopher Caldwell essay, published just a few weeks before ‘Epic Fury.’ “..then all our measurements of acceptable risk need to be recalculated—in Iran and Venezuela and on our own streets.”

Excellent piece from Christopher Caldwell in the new Spectator USA, on Minnesota and Trump, and tying in the Rob Reiner post with a stark conclusion. Caldwell, if anyone needs to be told this, is hardly a ‘Panican,’ so when an incredibly sharp mind writes like this it’s

The author, a Millennial, opens this book freely confessing that ‘Jurassic Park’ made him a dinosaur obsessive, and has an amusing bit on all the subsequent ‘Jurassic Park’ sequels. So true on JP and dinosaurs as a great gateway drug to the past and a love for history.
