Weird experience: Walking down the sidewalk, an African immigrant lady comes up behind me and takes my arm like I’m escorting her. I can’t catch what she’s saying but there’s a person with a large dog coming down the sidewalk in the other direction and she acts like she’s afraid of it. As soon as we pass the dog, she smiles and says thank you and goes on her way. It really seemed like she just wanted someone to walk her past the dog. Not complaining, I was happy to help with whatever it was. Just odd.

This is a good point re. the "I regret my kids" meme. Realising that you just have to get on with doing the needful, and that there will not be a parade or a medal, is a hard lesson of proper adulthood.

Baby is proxy for other things. Having a baby means being an adult. Being an adult means being invisible and doing thankless daily tasks and duties you can’t expect to get credit for. Modern people, especially modern women, cannot bear the thought of being invisible. Hence the constant public disclosures of private things and feelings that you should keep to yourself in the name of “raising awareness” and “breaking stigmas.”

I don't get the resigning in protest thing, though it's consistent with the purity spiral stand on business approach to boomer protest politics. You're supposed to hunker down and subvert, like the bureaucrat who, while the ashes were raining down from vesuvius, didn't leave his post because Obama forgot to tell him it was over. Double Indemnity is indeed great. Re. murders for insurance money, presumably there's a selection effect at work bcs we don't hear about the successful ones, but they all seem so bad at it.
I've mentioned before the one I heard where the guy was an experienced police detective & still googled something like "How to make a murder look like suicide".
