@tdunny73 I don’t blame the club for taking Billings over Bontempelli. Bont was a very late bloomer. Billings was 150 game player who had a good career with flashes. Petracca was the obvious #1, I never understood the hype on McCartin until the Tom Boyd trade shook the market to bits.

@7NewsAustralia He should absolutely go. Every other world leader will be there. Don’t virtue signal and stay home as some kind of faux ‘cost cutting measure’. John Howard and Bob Hawke always cheered loudly for the nation. So should you.

@dleca Look, I’d say no, because it was a different recruiting team - but that was the year after we traded Billings, so potentially it was fresh in the memory in that sense. The similarities were definitely there. Billings was a magnificent junior. A body of work to rival Nick Watson.

@dleca The game has changed so quickly - pace is EVERYTHING right now. Smillie’s lack of pace - not kidding - would see him lucky to go top 16-17 in that same draft if it was held today. Look at Ollie Greeves. But this was 2024. Cripps had won the Brownlow the year before. Amazing.

@dleca I had Reid inside my top ten, I loved him. I thought he had top five talent - he was arguably the most skilful. But I didn’t love his kicking penetration. But see below: I had Smillie above him. So did everyone! And I rated Travaglia; just not top 10 IMO in a terrific draft.
The Saint@StKFootball

@PapiMorant @TBarkerSaints My guess is Harvey Langford & Murphy Reid will be the two of the top 10 who slide down to our picks. Josh Smillie is also a chance. I’d be fairly happy with any of that combination, despite all three having some knocks. This is why I’m VERY open to live trading on draft night.

‘Not on my watch’. Wow - you got it in one. We need a whole team that has the same ethos: ‘Not on my watch’. I think Darcy Wilson & Huge Garcia are developing it. Callum Wilkie has it. But too many are ‘playing AFL’ rather than ‘competing to win’ - it’s a psychological shift. x.com/jaded61/status…

I’ve put the line through McLaughlin for years. Too small (193cm), too old (28), body shape, etc. But we’re in an emergency situation now. He’s a Podsiadly clone. He’s kicked bags of 5 of more on 15 (!) occasions. Gee whiz, it’s bloody tempting. youtu.be/KFtq-CzIUAc?fe…

VFL: bag of seven goals for Box Hill Hawk Brodie McLaughlin last night against his former club Willy. Gives him 26 for the season. Wonder if it will stir some interest from AFL clubs.

@RWBFooty His opportunity was to add strength and become a power forward but his gangly frame appears to have maxed out. The rubbery kicking/poor technique prevents him being reliable around goal. He has some assets - mobility, durability, versatility. Best hope is he’s a steady back up.

@StKFootball Not sure where the growth in his game is going to come from at this point? He doesn’t have the marking vicegrip of a Treacy. Does he somehow get better at marking literally with his hands? Can he get bigger and learn to work off opponents or fitter and get to more contests? Idk

Anthony Caminiti’s growth curve appears to have stalled. This might be his ceiling. He’s actually got value to us long-term - as an emergency back up swingman, earning min wage. That’s about fair. But on the current trajectory, he won’t morph into the 40-goal forward we hoped.

@Rob_Melbo He’s amazing on radio. The Ramble is fabulous listening. Rabbit Hole is even better. On TV, he’s nowhere near his natural, authentic self. Bluff and bluster but no touch with the common fan. The difference is night and day.

I felt relieved when Max Hall was near a contest or had ball in hand. He has both a competitive edge AND a physical presence - that combination sets him apart from so many of our players, who don’t stay in the heat of fierce contests for long enough. He’s a super player.

@triplemfooty Not having a crack at Damo, but when Stevens very gently prods him to analyse the game… There’s nothing. AFL journalists know so little about the game they cover, they can’t actually figure out what parts of their own teams are good and bad, beyond the scoreboard. Nail deep.

@lethalfooty I think he lacks high level endurance - big efforts take a LOT out of him, and he seems to take a while to recover. But I’m also wary that the medical staff haven’t pushed him. He’s broken down so often that the focus has been on just playing games. Preseason critical for him.

@StKFootball Is it just me or does he lack running capacity? Seems to lack the motor; the endurance isn’t there Patience is growing thin as to when we’ll see performances rather than flashes

Mattaes does stuff that makes you think he’s so close to putting it all together and ripping the entire competition. But they’re just too fleeting. I’d trade some of his incredible talent for that 120-minute consistency he needs to deliver to become the champion that we need.

That was a really meek showing in the last quarter. Wilted. TDK was schooled by his opposing number in a last quarter yet again, and I’m not sure this is the version of Sam Flanders we gave up a first round draft pick before. Hugo will need to learn to cope with the hype.

@jkbasley Agreed. Very frustrating. Put all our eggs in the King basket, managed him poorly, he didn’t recover, and didn’t recruit another key forward. It’s a valid question.

@StKFootball For all the good work our list team has done they’ve dropped the ball in not recruiting a decent KP Forward. What I would give for just one of Treacy, Amiss or Voss tonight (and every week). Hammer and Keeler don’t cut it unfortunately.

Another promising opportunity to get this spluttering season going is lost. Five day break, injuries, long trip…all true. But it’s clear: not only is our forward line broken, but this group cracks against good teams. Mentally? Very fragile. Zero grit. Your thoughts below 👇
