@StMichaels1070

For nearly a thousand years Christians in Southampton have worshipped in St Michael's Church. Everyone is welcome.

St Michael’s Church was founded by Normans after the Conquest. Part of the tower dates to c. 1070. French raiders killed townsfolk inside the church in 1338. There was major restoration/rebuilding work in the 19th century. Over 950 years of history in the heart of Southampton.

Well done @TimDaykin1 for the excellent BBC local radio ‘act of worship’ today. Have you ever thought of going into the ministry? 😉

Waiting at St Michael's Southampton to make a media interview, a couple arrived. They stood in the middle of the church and he sang out loud 'How great thou art'. Confidence in God in challenging times.

St Michael’s Church dates back to around 1070. It is the oldest building in Southampton still in use. Here’s a view of it through an archway in the 14th century town walls. The church was already around three hundred years old when these walls were built...

Last week saw the annual Southampton New Year Docklands Service at St Michael’s Church. A very pleasant service with some excellent music. I believe some 750,000 sailors pass through Southampton every year. Amazing figure. @ABPSouthampton

@GeneralJules It’s great. I’ve got a tweet lined up in my drafts about the two lecterns there. I’ve read that this one (rescued from Holyrood Church when it was bombed) is the oldest of its kind in the country and it was apparently painted to look like wood to protect it during the Civil War.

A view from inside the burnt out shell of 'All Saints Church' that stood in our High Street before the Blitz of WW2, the view is looking east toward the alter which was shielded a little in the alcove from the intense heat of the ensuing fire that gutted our old church.
