Being a physician and knowing how to treat patients makes you uniquely valuable in public health, which deals with (among many other things) the deployment of those treatments.

Whenever he talks about his experience at length, he goes into more detail about what he actually does.

Being a physician is fundamentally about being trained to know how the body works normally, what can go wrong, and how to treat it if it does. You can (and many do) apply that skillset in research.
